My two Oldsmobiles: 1954 and 1931

Hi, I got my first car which was a 1950 Olds in 1958 and have been working on Oldsmobiles ever since. I'm sure I will enjoy this forum. I currently own a '54 S-88 Holiday Coupe and a '31 Sport Coupe. These are great cars!

Welcome Rocket.

Just a little info on my modest friend here. I have been corresponding with him for about a dozen years now. That all came about from my buying a set of NOS backup lights. He has forgotten more than I will ever know about 54 Oldsmobiles. He has had lots of Oldsmobiles over the years. His son Gary just joined on here a couple weeks ago. I certainly want to welcome my buddy Rocket Bob and all the knowledge he brings to the table. He will be a big help to lots of us. On top of that, he is really a neat guy.

Welcome

Hi Larry, Oil is kind of like girlfriends. All have the same purpose but have different characteristics. First off, I always rebuild my Olds engines so they are in like new condition. Years ago I started out with the "yellow can" oil because of the vast advertising. It seemed to work ok but over the years I learned some not so good things about it. I won't go into that. Then the new synthetic oils came on the market and were said to be far superior so I decided to switch to Mobile 1. I'm sure that's a very good oil as I use it in my Chevy truck. But it wasn't long that I found that synthetic oil leaks out of older engines that use cork gaskets etc. where a regular oil won't. So, I did some more research and then realized that I and most of the motorcycle guys use Valvoline in our bikes. I decided if that oil can withstand the conditions in an air cooled, high rpm engine that it should be fine for an Olds Rocket V8. So I am now a firm believer in Valvoline 10-30 oil with a quality filter. I change both once a year if the milege is less than 1,000 miles. 3,000 miles for sure. A few extra dollars is good insurance on keeping your engine in top condition. Good luck!

Welcome, I for one would like to see some more pic's of your cars. I've been helping another member on here with his 35. Been having some issues with a persnickety carb on it. Am I assuming correctly you are also from Colorado?

Thanks Rocketbob for answering my question.I've used the "yellow can" in the past without any problems, but they have changed oil in general so much in the last few years. Larry
