3 speed automatic Floor Shifter D S L

Sorry if this has an easy explanation, but I tried searching for the answer and couldn't come up with anything. What do these letters stand for and how are they used? I assume D is drive and is just the standard automatic transmission for normal driving. I also assume L is some type of low gear, but I don't know what the S is for and how it should be used. Can you go back and forth between these? I appreciate any help.

Drive, Second, Low (and yeah, I realize that Olds called it "Super" - that doesn't change what it does in the trans). Olds took a lot of trouble to write this up in the owners manual.
