Finally a 442 4 me

Last weekend I finally became an owner of a 442, and after 1,910 miles it is home.

I have the build sheet, it is a factory w25 car, with a w26 dual gate shifter. I do not know if you can see it in the pic but it's there.

The second pic if my good luck travel charm. A 1965 442 grill emblem, I pulled off of a 65 442 in a kink yard when I was 17.

Very cool Troy, congrats. Speaking of placards, here's one I pulled from a 67.
Did you find the build sheet by chance, or do you know where they found it?

Congratulations Troy. Glad you got it home without any issues. Gotta say I'm really digging the SS1with whitewall tire look. Could you tell me whose tire that is and the size?

Yes, I will let you know. I have all 4 ssI, but the other tires were dry rotted and wouldn't hold air. I think the wheels will clean up well.

I am going down to document a few things on it here after while. I unloaded from the trailer last Saturday. Then I left for Sr. Week at Church Camp on Sunday. So, I have not had my "post delivery inspection" yet.

Supposedly, the car has sat sine 1984. Was shipped to Fla, a few years ago, and Sat some more.

The trailer is my buddy's, he just bought it. It is a 18 foot SureTrac. It pulled like a dream. Hardly knew it was back there.

My truck gets about 14.7 mpg normally. I averaged 12.4 mpg for the entire trip.

The picture in post #4 is while we were going through the Big Walker tunnel.

Nice find.
Looks like a good, solid car.

Thanks Ed,
Hope you are feeling better.

No, the 2-door Cutlass is going to hang around for a while as a donor, if I need any parts. I am going to use the best out of the two. Then we will see what happens to the Cutlass

I was looking today, and I am already going to use the Cutlass front wiring harness.

Thanks, the windshield channel will be the biggest challenge.

Most all of the rest of the parts, I already have at the ready from the 70 Cutlass I started on.

I am going to keep it basically stock with the exception of no vinyl top, (all twilight blue with white stripes), add 4 spoke steering wheel, and a wing.

That's a good eye. Unfortunately I did remove it for the trip. I hope I didn't offend anyone going up the road

It is back in now. The trunk shuts really well.

Well, it's official. After weeks of rain, rain, and more rain; the clouds held the H2O in. I loaded the 442 back on the trailer, drove the 50 mile round trip to have the VIN inspected by a new car dealer and then on to the DMV to get the Ohio title.

On a good note, the body guy may come look at it next week. Possibly start in August or September.

Great pictures, great car -- loads of potential. Congratulations.

But I gotta ask: what is a kink yard? Do I want to know?

As Expected

The paint and body guy is coming tomorrow to look the 442 over. I thought I would pull the windshield and see how bad the window channel is. The windshield was already cracked, but I still don't see how you guys get these out without breaking them, even with a windshield knife.

As expected, going to need quite a bit of channel work.

The window channel on our project was rusted through just like that. We had to patch it up, but we were able to stick our whole hand in the channel. Yikes!

A whole hand, that is quite a bit of rust. Did you get a donor dash, repo, or form your own? Where did you seam it?

The engine looks very promising, do you have any info on the internals? Are you going to tear it down or just finish it out and run it?

In the first picture that is before we even pressed down on the metal, after we did that whole piece fell into the car. At the time my brother had two other '68s that we used for donor parts and what not.

Supposedly it was just rebuilt to stock, never started. I do not have a lot of information on the internals. It is just setting in the engine compartment. I most likely will pull it out and pull the heads to see what I have. Then break it in on a run stand.

Well, ran into a snag today.

First, let me say the car had no ignition key. However, the ignition wasn't in the lock position and you could turn the steering wheel.

Well after the VIN verification trip, and after it was in the garage, the steering wheel locked in place. Of course the wheels are not straight.

Now it was my intention to take the steering column out of my Cutlass and swap it anyway.

Here is my problem. With the steering wheel locked where it is, I cannot get to the outer rag joint bolt to remove the steering shaft.

Is there an easier way to do this, before I drop the steering box?

Maybe tomorrow, I'll find the right combination to get to the rag joint bolt. It couldn't be any closer to the frame in its rotation, if I tried to put it there.

Troy, you may try removing the column flange screws from the firewall, disconnecting
the backdrive rod and taking off the 2 column nuts. It may drop down and
give you enough room to to turn the whole column to get to it.

Adam,

The column is loose just hanging by the two dash nuts. I didn't even think about turning the whole column. Sometimes, it is the simple things. I will give it a try.

Thanks.
