70 442 Factory Burgandy mist 4 speed

Today I picked up a 70 442 factory 4 speed bucket seat console burgandy mist with pearl interior major project from John in Medford Oregon. We both do lots of Olds stuff and I have been wanting to do a 70-72 again for several years. John ran across this one and has posted some pictures of this very ugly treasure on this site. It has been repainted some blue with a kind of Starsky and Hutch horrible stripe. We will get started on it after we finish the 67 5VY 442 for my better half. Then this car will be probably our winter project next winter. I had a very nice 72 that is similar over 30 years ago. So, this will be me reliving that car. I will post pictures as we go. The engine has been replaced with a 455 that is as John put it kind of a Frankenstien of sorts. Appears to be a 69 block, C heads, 67 intake, no carb, 66-67 style PS pump, the 4 speed hump was beat down to clear something and it has some kind of automatic in it with a 73up style shifter, Original style seats are still in place. Right quarter appears to have been replaced and lots of bondo here and there at this point. I think we will have it media blasted to get to a starting point on the body. It is a vinyl top car but I doubt we will keep that. I suspect we will stick to the white interior and burgandy mist exterior, I will probably do a aftermarket w25 hood and w29 style stripes. I like that. It will be a 4 speed again. The rearend is a 12 bolt O type. Not sure of guts as of yet. Has the boxed lower trailing arms and the rear sway bar is missing. The frame connectors are there and it is a disc brake and power steering car. I am thinking of adding factory AC as well. I really like the American Racing 200S "Chrome Coke bottle" Mags. I will probably look for a set of buy a new set for it. 15" with T/A radials no doubt.
I will keep you all up to date from time to time.

I will post some pictures over the next few days as we sort through the car.

I am excited to have this as our next project. I have a 71 455 that was Mondello built about 15 years ago that will be going into it.

Let me know your thoughts.

Enjoy

Thanks again John (2blu442) for the great find and fair deal.

Your welcome Larry, I look forward to watching your restoration of the car. It is (or was) a cool car and deserves to be brought back to its former glory again.

Some of the pieces I will be hunting for are as follows:

Ram air hood, (ok with aftermarket but must be metal frame)
4 speed shifter and console including reverse lock out parts
grills
hood trim
Muncie M21 or M20
chrome coke bottle mags 15 x 7 Yes I know not Olds specific or factory
windshield trim
pictures of burgandy mist 70 cars

Just getting started looking on this car so this list will grow for sure

Thanks Email direct what ever you have lemoldsnut@aol.com

Today i was able to look at the car more. Rearend is a 69 Chevelle 12 bolt 2:73 open. Good news is a Chevelle rearend is worth some to sell, It is easy to get parts for. I am not looking to make a numbers matching car or even care about that at this point. So, I will think about that for a while. If I find a M20 I might put the 3:08 O type in I have. But would rather have something like 3:42 or 3:31. With an M20 would be a nice combination. It would come out of the hole ok and still cruise well on the highway.

Not what I thought was there, but at least its a 12 bolt rather than the 8.2 inch 10 bolt.

Well John you made no real claim to what it was and in the end it worked out. I was hoping for a 3:23 and have made a deal to trade it for a correct 70 O type 12 bolt 3:23 so that will be good. I also plan on a M20 so that will be great. We all know there are always surpises when dealing with old cars. I did find out that Whitney Olds is from Montesano Washington. I have contacted them to see if they by a miracle of a chance have any old records of it. They did confirm they were an Olds dealer back then. Now Chevy. If like the Dealership I was body shop manager of we had Olds and Chevy. Keep old stuff in the attic. That would be cool if they have any history.

I will attach a few pics to this.

Thanks all

Larry
