The console bracket can be screwed to the floor. You will need a shift cable, shift cable bracket that mounts on the transmission pan bolts and a shift bracket that bolts onto the transmission shift lever.

I believe the parts you need are all repop'ed if you can't find good used ones. I've seen a couple different shifter cable brackets that bolt to the transmission pan. I don't know if they're different between the TH350, TH400 or two speed but you should ask the question before buying the bracket. Here's some pictures of a 1969 shifter bolted to the floorboard and the console bracket behind it. I believe this is the same as 1968 since the consoles are the same. This bracket is welded but as 67442HT said you could bolt it down if you chose to. John

thank you 2blu442, these pictures is just what i needed. got a question on the third picture (shifter), the part that is on the frontend of the shifter bracket where it joins the hump of the transmission housing, what is the name of that part. i will be needing it. also, any idea where the shifter is bolted on to the floorboard? and also the console bracket? are there any marking on the floorboard?
thank you,

I just finished this conversion in my '71, and used this pic as a starting point, '72 would be the same.
rearbrackettoseatbeltholedim.jpg

I welded in the rear console mount according to this measurement (2 1/2 inches from the center line of seat belt bolts) then attached the shifter to the console and set them in place.

There should be some dimples in the floor board/trans tunnel that will 'kind of' line up with the holes in the shifter. Only 2 of the 5 dimples lined up perfect for me, the others were off.

There is another dimple that is near where the 1" hole needs to be drilled for the cable. The front console mount also has a couple of dimples to align with, but mine were very faint, hence the need to mount the shifter and console to mark the front mount point.

There are 2 sets of dimples in the floor pan, a set for a standard shifter, and a set for a dual gate.

An assembly manual is of great help in this project. If you are not a member here:
http://wildaboutcarsonline.com/
I highly recommend it. They have a copy of the Assembly Manual you can look at among other books and files.

thank you,
The thing on the front is a foam plug that goes over the cable and seals the hole in the floorboard. If you set everything in place I think you'll be in good shape to locate the holes to drill. But if you still have some doubts let us know and one of us can try to come up with more measurements for you.

I am glad someone asked this since I wanted to do the exact same thing!! Someone put in some aftermarket ratchet shifter in my 68 (was a column shift from the factory). I do have a 68 console and shifter.. but I just need to put it all together. I need to get some of the brackets and stuff as well. I am glad I stumbled across this

Is all the black stuff around the console brackets just seam sealer?

Ahh, it was yours.

Thanks Pete.
I've had the pic on my computer for a while, and couldn't remember who it was from. Even though I didn't install a dual gate, your pic that I posted helped me a ton in the installation of my console and standard shifter.
