67 cutlass supreme rebuild questions newer to community

I have a 67 cutlass supreme it is a 4 door but it was my father's car.... he passed and I'm going to restore but I'd like to build a hot rod out of it... I have a 330 In it... I would like to put in a 350 chevy or olds... but i dont know which one is going to be the most cost effective and best bang for my buck..... I'm newer to learning the trade I have a good friend of mine that is a great mechanic that will be helping rebuild as well as teaching me any input or advice

Welcome to the site, its your car to do as your wish. Lets see what your starting with. Putting an Olds engine back in it is the easiest route, you can rebuild the 330 or put anything from a 350 to a 455 in it with minor mods. I would also recommend to change the transmission from the switch pitch st300 to a T350/400 or an O'drive. Some gears would help also.

A Chevy engine can be done by treating the car like a Chevelle. You'll need new eng frame mounting brackets, an adapter plate and flex plate to mate to your current trans, or your can change the engine and transmission all together. You'll also need some wiring changes as the starters are on opposite sides.

Ok I plan on replacing the transmission either way because I want the car to be able to move my old man was a hot rod guy so I plan on building a high performance motor trying to push 400 hp out of it I just dont know which motor would be a better fit I know rule of thumb is to keep it original but would rebuilding 350 rocket be more expensive then a chevy 350?? I guess that's where I'm kinda lost is it worth it to me to purchase a 350 rocket because I'd expect parts are going to be harder to find and way more pricey I have budget of around 4-6k for motor and trans

Although a bit more than your budget, this would be a quality build and add trans of your choice.

Just to share, I've got the same car and the 1967 330 4bbl came from the factory with 320 hp. If you put in a 3 or 4 speed automatic and maybe 3.42 rear end gears it might be snappy enough to enjoy as it is. Even if you decide to put in a different engine you'll likely still want to change the rear end gears as many of these came with 2.56 or 2.78 so you might start with that and see what you think. Just a thought to consider. John

Hey thanks for the insight the issue is the 330 needs rebuild either way cause the cylinder compression is only about 90 so I think piston rings are shot.... seems like parts to rebuild the olds 330 are pricey compared to dropping in a 350 chevy.... shed been sitting for 14 years I'd like to do the car justice but with transmission repair paint rear and engine I'm trying g to be the most cost effective in the restoration...
