I pulled my engine out for a repaint as I wasn't happy with the color. I have a set of 68 442 valve covers that were taken off the engine when the car was new. It had appox. 50 miles on it and they were replaced with a set of chrome covers from a 66 W-30 Track Pac car by my buddy. I didn't realize how far the color was off on my engine and after getting the 68 covers,it has been bothering me. I spent a bunch of $$$$ trying to match the covers till I got a very good match. Here's some pictures of the engine and the covers, the covers look a little different in the picture but it's a match when put side by side. The paint is Diamont base coat with hardener and the hardener gives it a slight sheen like the original paint on the covers. Thoughts?

I have decided to put a matte type urethane clear over the paint for durability. I'm afraid that gas will hurt the base coat pain if something happens to one of the carbs. I painted my 66 Track Pac engine with a base/clear coat and it held up great. I even had the heads hot tanked after seizing some valves and the hot tank didn't faze the paint. I just hope the clear doesn't change the color because of the nice match it is.

It shouldn't because it's urethane paint with hardener. Anything that comes out of a rattle can or bought sprayable from vendors is enamel and I would think not as good as urethane. My 66 Track Pac car had urethane on the engine and it held up extremely well. The engines had lacquer on them from the factory.

Im pretty sure my motor was a virgin when i got it. It still had some original paint on the harmonic balancer and the flex plate, which looks more like what you used, than what i bought. Did you match the paint yourself or have it done? Do you have the formula for your mix? I would love to know the formula for my motor, bedfore it goes into the car. It looks amazing, beautiful car!!!

How I arrived @ the correct color match was,I got a set of valve covers from a friend that were taken off the car when new. They were put in a box and stored until I got them a few years ago. My engine was already painted and when I compared the two colors,my engine color was off a few shades and tint. My neighbor is a paint rep and he and another guy worked for two weeks on and off till they got a match. I asked him to keep up with what they did but they didn't,so getting anymore wouldn't be possible from this paint, sorry. I think it's the best bronze I've seen & there's probably 20 vendors with bronze paint all claiming to be a match. It's each to his own with the preference of which paint to use. I will tell you this,I have an original OEM paint code from PPG that came from my PPG dealer and I think it's a very good match too. I had a quart mixed and almost used it instead but didn't. I have a friend building a 66 442 and he bought the quart from me and was very pleased with the color. He's an older guy and he says it's the best he's seen. I will give you the code if you want it. Thanks for the kind words,I appreciate them.

Mike

Maybe if you stop buying the shrimp and lobster with that EBT card and get back to your corn dogs, you could have finished the car sooner Lol. But all kidding aside the car looks absolutely beautiful. Job well done brother!!! PS don't forget our deal you have to deliver it north of Route 40.
