Thanks! Got really lucky. An interior/vinyl top shop was 3 blocks away from the paint and body guy. This top guy was really good and has done hundreds of vinyl tops over the years.

Wow, I like it. I never seen a vinyl roof not come out to the front wind shield trim and down to the drip rail. I really like the look. The paint looks amazing as well.

Thanks - that's the way it was done from the factory for the Supreme in 1970 and I believe in 71 too. For 72 I'm pretty sure it goes all the way to the front and bottom on the sides.

That's a sharp looking car , My wife loves the car and color. The paint really looks like glass, the wet sander did an awesome job. The engine sounds great. Very nice!!

Thanks! Really happy with how the car is turning out. Paint ended up even better than I had hoped. The pics don't do it justice and it's still really dirty. The video of the motor doesn't capture how crisp and responsive it runs. Since I asked Frank to use a cam I already had for the build I was nervous how it would turn out and Frank was too. We were both a worried it might be a little too big but it seems to be a great fit with the 374 and the Rhodes lifters. Can just barely hear the ticking. Really excited to feel how it drives with this motor and the upgraded 2004R trans and converter.

Motor idles very smooth considering the size of that cam, should have pretty good manners. Wonder what it has for vacuum at idle?

The vacuum gauge showed 16" of vacuum during that video but the the tachometer was NOT hooked up. It sounded to me like it was idling at a higher RPM - like around 1,100 -1,200 or so. I bet if the idle was dropped to around 850 - 900 it would be in the 13" - 14" range and the idle would have had more of a lope. Also since the Rhodes lifters usually add about 3" of vacuum at idle it probably would be around 10 or 11 w/o them at a lower RPM.

2004R is out of the car and on it's way to Lonnie at Extreme Automatics to be upgraded from a Stage 1 to a Stage 2, a deeper Hughes pan, and a new 3000 converter that will be better suited to the upgraded motor.

Sweet. I have the Hughes pan it is a bugger to seal and good to maybe 12's racing. The sheet metal pan is a better option and Extreme offers it.

Lonnie suggested the Hughes pan for the upgrade to a stage 2 so I'll go with whatever he suggests. I'll be talking to him a few times this week so I'll ask about the Hughes vs. sheet metal one and see what he says.

I found the 4L60E filter fit better than the 700R4 filter with Hughes pan. Made it easier for me when I still had the Olds powered 4x4. It only leaks a small amount, down to seepage. I wish there was a pan gasket like factory 42RE, rigid carrier with rubber sealing lines throughout. I have used this pan on 3 different 2004R's, so it isn't the trans case. It leaks a small enough amount that I can run it down the track, shoot it down with brake clean when I get there and rarely have to add trans fluid. If you are not racing with slicks, it will be fine. I am glad he adds the billet forward shaft in his Stage 2 trans, I will be buying the whole billet foward shaft/drum assembly when my stroker is done, stock can't live over the Olds torque past 400 ft/lbs.

So I had a long talk with Lonnie about the 2 pans. He said the Sheet Metal one looks really cool and works very well but it just will NOT seal 100% correctly and he said he would not guarantee it against leaking. So I'm sticking with the Hughes which he said he would give his personal guarantee it would never leak. Very strange. Sounds like the opposite of what you said. I am obviously going with what Lonnie suggests especially when he tells me he will cover it if there's an issue.

Trans is all done and on it's way back to the car. Here are the final specs:

Extreme Automatics Stage 2 build w/Hughes deep pan setup for 6,000 - 6,200 RPM WOT shifts, R&R 9.5" 3000-3200 non-lockup converter

That sounds awesome. Interesting on the pan, Dr Dan Mascal swears by those sheet metal pans. I love how my 2004R behaves stock under light throttle, firm when you stomp on it.

Inflame who?To the op car looks great. Did you have trouble with the fit of your headers?

Sorry for the long delay on this. As a reminder this was a graduation present for my son. He graduated in May from VMI and is now a 2nd LT in the Army. Trouble is he had to go to Fort Knox first, then Fort Leonard Wood, MO (where he is now) and will end up in Fort Campbell, KY in 2017.....so he can't take the car for a while. Because of that the push to get it done for graduation was gone. The car will actually go to my Dad's house in Northern VA and he said he would be glad to keep it garaged, drive it, pamper it, and take care of it until my son is settled and can take it as his own.....so the work has finally started back on the car. Engine compartment is being detailed this week. Upper and lower control arms and brakes are going in. The motor and trans should be back in the car by next week. Will be adding pics as I get them over the next few weeks.

Thanks! All the work was done by Frank and Terry Trimble out of MD. Their shop is called TR Performance. They do really high end/detailed stuff. They did a lot of the work on my 71 442 also.

For the engine compartment they have a several step process that starts with disassembly, then cleaning, wire wheeling, & power washing. Followed by POR 15 treatment for any areas that need it, then primer, then they cover everything with Chassis black. The transformation from start to finish is impressive.

Here's the final product on my 442 but the pictures just don't do it any justice.

Haha - thanks guys. Can't wait to see the finished product except with the gold instead of the blue!! ...and then of course see how the new motor and trans are on the road. I will have to make the 4 hour trip up north to test drive it and check it out when it's done. Will drive my 442 up when I do so Frank and his brother can do a few small "add-on" projects for me (oil cooler and a fix for vapor lock I've been having).

Sorry Copper not sure on the brand. Frank gets these for a good price from his parts guy. He said he thinks they are from China but not sure if they are procomps or not. He put the same set on another Olds and they worked out great and the price was right so I told him to go for it. One word of caution - he said some of the cheaper brands only have 1 1/8" bottoms and these have 1 1/2" - He said the thinner ones may be too weak.

Finally got the car to a stopping point. Still a few small items to be finished up on later but surprised my Dad with the car on his Bday on Saturday. As a reminder from an earlier post he will keeping the car as his own for several years until my son has a garage to keep it safe. It looked like it might be done in time so I drove 4 hours up to Frank's, picked up the car and surprised my Dad with it - he said it was the best Bday he ever had:
IMG_1249_zpsujpwztzh.jpg

He and I went on several long drives over the weekend. My 79 year old Dad was like a kid again doing big nasty burnouts and chirping the tires on the 1-2 shift. You couldn't wipe the smile off his face. Really happy w/how the car came out and it's a blast to drive w/the 3.90 gears 2004R trans w/OD for the hwy and the built up 374 stroker SBO. Guessing power to be around 420/420. The stage 2 trans drives really mild when you granny drive it but comes alive at WOT!!

1900 rpm at 60 mph is wicked nice. My 2004R also behaves that way, couldn't ask for more. Super nice car and gesture.

Thanks - not sure where I wrote it's at 1900 RPM at 60 but I think it closer to 2200 or so at 60. I was just checking the RPM ranges when my Dad and I were cruising this weekend. I'm happy with where it is. Hwy cruising is really nice at any speed.

In my opinion the 3.90 gear, 28" tire, and the 2004R is the perfect combo for both off the line and hwy cruising. Cruising at about 70 mph in OD/4th and putting the pedal on the floor and feeling the trans downshift to 3rd and and the governor holding it in 3rd until 6000 RPM is awesome. This SBO likes RPM. The governor is tough to get dialed in but Lonnie at Extreme automatics nailed this one. It shifts almost exactly at 6000 RPM at WOT in all gears which is exactly what I asked him for. Really fun car to drive and drive hard.
