Garage Finally

As long as it reached an initial set light rain is the best thing for it. If it's still wet it's going to be a friggen mess (unless it was just a quick shower!)

Agreed. Most concrete contractors will tell you to hose the pour down a couple times each day to help the concrete cure. Sounds weird but it's true. Think it has something to do with it being an exothermic reaction of limestone and mix. You want to keep the pour cool while it cures.
#44
Really Allan? That is so counter intuitive. I would've never thought to do that, that's cool! Maybe that's why the two spots of concrete I have ever poured in my life looked like dog turd lol!
Trip, I hope it turns out ok! It looks great anyway.

Epoxy has been mentioned but talk to your concrete guy 1st. I see its already poured. If they did not add a vapor barrier you may want to seal it and not coat it.
You may already know all this but its worth mention. Moisture will wick up and pop epoxy or such if you have any ground moisture issues.
You could search TheGarageJournal for more info.
Have fun with it!

So I send an email to my GF with pictures of the new floor. This is the response I get back:
'That's a beautiful tree on the right side of the garage! What kind is it?'
Leave it to my little Art Major foof foof up my manly garage! Lol The poor Man Cave has been besmirched by such womanly chatter! sigh

Yikes, I just noticed there are trees in the picture.. Obviously she's on a different wave length than us.
Don't let those branches and leaves get close enough to clog the gutter. You putting in 'smart screen on the troughs?

Five hours in and we have four walls. Yeah I'm a little excited. I've been part of construction projects in the past but when it's yours it's a bit more special. I hope my GF will be ok now that her tree can't be seen, lol.

Looking good Trip. Just in time for winter. Good timing. Hey where'd your GF's tree go? Firewood for those cold winter nights....what she can't see won't hurt her

Allan I took a special pic of 'The Bush' just for the GF. Of course I had some staging in there too In fact I'm on the phone right now and she's asking if the carpenters broke a branch on the bush, lol. This is what I get for having an Art Major for a GF. Now she's asking why the roof line goes with the existing house and the peak isn't the other way, haha omg.

Almost done. They came and put the vinyl siding on today. Just have the doors left to put in. I have a friend doing the electrical wiring with me helping. Have to dig a two foot deep trench from the house to the corner. I'm not looking forward to that but I am very happy to have the garage finished before Winter really sets in.

Trip - looks good except....they didn't finish off the gable ends by the lower soffit properly. That's all supposed to be enclosed. Must have been in a hurry. You'll also want to put eaves on there with a run off away from the foundation.
Maybe rent a Ditch Witch to trench. Much faster and consistent depth. Have fun with that wiring and make sure you do run 240 to the garage. It will come in very handy in the future when you decide to install a new compressor or start welding.

Great looking garage. Also look at 6 lamps T5 HO fixtures on the internet. You could light up the whole place like daylight with 3 or four of them. You can look them up on the internet. I installed them in my garage

Allan those areas didn't go unnoticed. I've already emailed the builder about fixing those and anything else we might find during the final walk through.
As far as Sandy went I think I was very lucky. I only lost the north facing wall of Tyvek on the garage and my cable went out around 8pm on Monday but came back up this morning (Wed) so that was a relief. Many around here lost shingles, trees down, electricity etc. I live at close to the highest elevation on the island so water wasn't my concern just the wind. All the low lying areas near the water and much of downtown Newport are covered with water feet deep in places. I lived through Irene and Bob so far and needless to say I'm no fan of hurricanes. Bob had the highest winds by far of the three, approaching 120mph. Sandy was a close 2nd with gusts around 80-85mph. That's a bit more than expected so I was a little on edge there for awhile. All in all I'm good and all my friends too. Thanks for the thoughts.

We got very lucky in central Ct! No loss of power,no wind damage or flooding but just a 1/2 hour away all hell broke loose by the shoreline. We are very lucky! I just hope those effected can get life back to normal very soon.

Had the carpenter over this morning fixing up the little things. Doors and electricity and we are done. I'll be looking into those T5HO lights for sure. Haven't read anything bad about them yet.

I guess it's my own made up term .... What I meant was .... Someone who knows how to caulk , can put a bead of caulk without having to " finger " it in too much , in order to remove too much excess caulk , possibly leaving it too thin , and then the caulk will crack in a few years . IIRC , you do have to " finger " it in so it bonds to the board properly . Maybe you can straighten me out on this matter , for it's been almost ten years since I have been a painter , and I certainly don't have as much experience as you do .
#75
excellent....
Trip looks great and good catch on the soffett, I would run gutters front and back, that would be a lot of water to just be free falling down at the doors, just saying, and a seamless gutter while the builder is finishing things up would be peanuts compared to later.....

Garage Doors in today along with the openers. DC motors and ultra quiet with some decent features. Very happy with the structure. Soon my buddy and I start on the electric and lighting. I'm leaning toward the T5HO lights. Six of those will make it look like daylight in there. I am thinking of heat, probably some sort of wall mounted propane heater. Also insulation but not sure what kind yet.
#79
heat...
Many years ago a friend had a fairly large work shop he had a waste oil furnace? Like a big heater that burned the oil from oil changes and such, not sure if they still make them or even if it is still allowed but that thing put out some btus and at the time wasn't priced for the rich and famous

Looks good George. I'm not too far behind you. I'm on the fence about what type of heat for me. I have a pellet stove in the house and because i have pellets here I'm debating a pellet stove for the garage. Lowes sells a window unit but it's a little too new for me to be a guinea pig.
