Frame off restoration of my 1972 442

Kevin, the hole in this door is 2 inches across. This came off a 1970 Cutlass Supreme with power locks. Attached are a few pictures in case Allen's door doesn't have the dimples. Let me know if either of you have any questions about the pictures. John

Thank you John, That did confirm to me what I was thinking, smaller hole on the door.
Rob, Thank you, this will help me in more ways then one.
Wow what haven't you done to that car? If and when you ever get done with lady, what will you do with your time? Can you say Vista? I think you can!!

I had some time on my hands today,so I took all of my under hood stuff to Cross Link Powder Coating in Cedar Hill. I dropped my transmission off at Ferrel Transmission in Duncanville, and took my engine and heads to Wells Racing in Duncanville.
The engine and transmission were working fine when I stopped driving it,but it had a bad miss. I think it had a bad valve??
I am real anxious now to get things to the next level.

Keep the updates coming. It's always nice to see progress on a build, especially when it's yours. That car will be brand new when you're done. Looks like you're going to have an incredible fun machine.
BTW, on the rear quarter glass, how do you get the vertical chrome off? I'm putting in soft ray glass all around + I need to install new rubber in the channels.

That is a wicked crazy body jig! It must take forever to make a body. Like going back to the old days when each coach was hand crafted. Your car is coming along nicely. What's happening in those pics - looks like spot welding??

That is a method of pulling small imperfections without drilling holes. It welds a nail like stud to the low area and then the slide hammer is used to pull by gripping the stud, then it is just ground off. Did you see in that same picture that I have my marks made for the wiring boot?

No, can't say that I saw the marks for the boot. Maybe I'm just getting old.... Can you get some detail shots when the hole is cut. The one John posted is too micro for me to see exactly the relationship to the rest of the door or A pillar.

Well I guess it's time to let it all out. This is not my first experience with a body shop. I have had basic collision work done, and restoration work done. I have had good luck with the collision services, but then again my expectations are not real high for this type of work.
My first attempt with a restoration was with a car just like the one i have now, but it was a automatic. This car was not numbers matching or anything special at all to be straight up about it. This was a car that i liked at the time ,and was willing to spend some money on it to make it nice. After a year I got it back. I had to fight real hard, but i picked it up, and brought it home. I started looking it all over once home, and found all kinds of things wrong with it. I opened the passenger door, which had been replaced, and found that it was still white on the edges. after about six to eight months of driving it the hood started peeling. After all that I just stayed away from doing any kind of "nice " paint jobs.
I will try to keep this short. I think 25 years have passed now, and here I find myself in yet another mess. I thought I had learned from the first guy, one would think anyway. This time I had a written proposal for the work to be done, ( WHATEVER !) and after about a year, and two real nice quarter panels messed up,and my perfect ram air hood broken in two spots, and crazy **** like being charged extra for priming the bottom of the car, and for painting the mirrors?? WTF This was a rotisserie restoration, I don't think anything should have been extra, at all. I think he should have paid me for a hood, and two quarter panels. When I picked the car up the shop owner had a final invoice for me that showed 1500.00 of discounts ( things that were supposed to be part of it anyway ) and then three thousand of extra crap that should have been part of it too. I am sure that you will all say that I should not have paid, or maybe I should have beat his sorry *** in the ground, and we all know I should not do that. I felt it was the only way to get my car out of the shop. I have found that the hood is not fixed properly, and will not line up with the grills, and I found some areas that are in need of more wet sanding/ buffing. When I found that the hood was not lining up I just backed off, I haven't touched it in six months or so.
The shop owner has agreed that he is responsible for fixing the hood and paint problem areas. Right now I am waiting to get my bumpers redone and on the car so we can see exactly what is not lining up,and why

Sorry to hear of the problems. It's probably why (besides the cost) I haven't had my cars painted. I'm a little familiar with your paint shop. (In Ovilla or on Ovilla Road, correct?) I've been there a couple of times and there were quite a few older cars being worked on. Seems like it was more of a restoration type shop than a collision repair shop. I'd stop in to kill time back in 2010 when I was working on a couple of TV shows that were filming in the area. The TV car wrangler was familiar with them and said they were nice guys. It sounds like the owner is accepting responsibility for the screw ups but I'd have a hard time with the $1500 of discounts backed up with the $3000 of overages. How do they charge more when you have in writing, before hand, the proposed price? If he had to vary from the proposal price by that much, I would think they would contact you before proceeding with the "additional" work, or um, charges. I sure you hope you get it worked out. I feel like I have a personal stake in that car.

You are thinking of the same shop, and yes nice guys, but he needs a good shop manager. There was no excuse for the lack of respect for my property.
I think it turned out good for the most part, it was just so mentally draining that I got all depressed about it. I know I need to get moving on
it again. thanks for the push.

Just got caught up in the resto thread Kevin. Sorry to hear about the body shopping jacking you around like that, and I know you probably desperately wanted to do something rash but didn't.
Have you got any more progress on the car? The pics you posted back at the end of May look very promising. Did you get the bumpers back and mounted? I spent close to 3 hours putting my rear bumper and bumper brackets on so it was as close to factory (AM Manual anyway) specs as possible. The front needs to come off so I can redo the stone shield, bumper braces and install new grills. Too cold up here to do any work till around end of April or mid May.

Thank you Allan. I have been playing around with the car some. I have the front sheet metal real close now, and awaiting the new chrome on the bumpers.

I just read your resto thread, man your car is gonna be sweet! So sorry to hear about the body shop screwing you over - that just plain sucks!. I'm sure it really took the wind out of your sails, but don't give up - you've come too far to go back now. Have you made any progress since the body shop debacle?

I am not happy with my progress on this car. I have to much going on in my life. When things cool down a little I will get back on it. First thing is to mount my bumpers. They really turned out nice.

After reading this thread you'all see why I drove 1,200 miles 4 Xs ( one trip to bring it to him and another to pick it up) to Michigan to have my body/paint done by uber metal man Bob Reeve and Carlos of CarShine Restorations in Jackson, MI. Excellent work at a great price and stands behind his work. Car was painted in 2000 and then mated to the chassis that I had restored, at his shop. After two days settling down on the body mounts Bob applied the stripes. Took it back to Fla. and finished assembly of the complete car. It still looks good after almost 15 yrs.
My take is you cannot take an Olds to someone who does everything else but an Olds. If the body/painter likes Olds cars you will surely get a better job. Just my 2 cents! Being "nice guys" doesn't cut it with me. All I want is the job done right because that IS what I am paying for!
