1970 442 W-30 project

I am starting my rebuild of my 442 W-30 that I bought back in November 2012. I sold this car in 2003 and the guy called me to see if I wanted to buy it back so I did. I didn't waste any time so I started tearing it apart to restore it. Unfortunately it does not have the original motor or trans but I am OK with that. I will search for the parts later. (If anyone has W-30 parts they want to get rid of let me know.)
I took the body off the frame and starting there. Hopefully by spring I can have a completed rolling chassis. The interior is going to a local shop in a week or so. I might have some questions regarding this rebuild so hopefully I can find some help. Like who has the best stock aftermarket parts at a good price? Is there a good restoration book out there for a w30?

Looks like a great project. solid car to start with. I think the assembly manual is the best book to have. You can download them at wildaboutcars. http://wildaboutcarsonline.com/cgi-b...aldisplayed=50

I plan to start on my chassis this year also.

Who has the best resto parts? Any opinions? I talked to Inline tube and they seem to have their crap together. Year One? Who has the best quality?

I have the frame at the powdercoater which is done and I have to pick up along with some other parts. Motor is tore down and cleaned. Now I need to reassemble it and detail. I will have the frame back tomorrow so I can start reassembly of that too. In a couple months it will be going to the body shop for its makeover. Sold the W31 so that should help with the funds a little.

Do some searching on this site, the typical place guys Get Olds specific parts from are in no particular order

Fusicks
The Parts Place
Tamraz
Supercars Unlimited
ILT

Then there are the larger companies like Year One and Original Parts Group but there are also a lot of specific manufactures like Legendary Auto Interiors who everyone will say has the best product hands down but you an get really decent interior set cover and parts from the otehr guys a lot cheaper.

I use the Part Place a decent mount as I live near there and they are as competitive with pricing as any. You will hear how good Fusicks and Super cars are with customer service and year one probably has the best return policy.

Ask lots of question many people have gone through recent restorations and know a ton!

Wow that really sucks that you had to sell the W-31! It would have been cool to own a gold W-30 and W-31 at the same time. I think the W-31 is more rear, but I understand your history with the W-30. Hell, if I had a chance to buy back my 65 GTO I sold back in the 90's or even my first car, 71 Cutlass Supreme I would do it in a heartbeat.

Anyway, I noticed you had a pic of your interior with everything removed. If you still have the dual gate still installed, would you mind taking a few close-up shots of it for reference? I know boldsmobile has a post out on dual gate position but it would really be nice to get some more pictures for reference. You don't have to include measurement, but that would be nice, just basically where it's mounted on the floorboards.

Thanks,
Dave

It is an LTR. Man that is fun. I like the powder coat because of the durability of it. They (Pro-Finish Powdercoating)(pro-finish.net) have been friends of mine for 15 plus years and they do an excellent job. 30% gloss black so basically a chassis black. He told be after he coated it he took a hammer to it and beat it to make sure it cured well. I kind of wish he didn't tell me that part. The stuff is very strong.

I have been using Parts Place, Year One for the seat covers and Inline Tube for a lot of the parts. The reason for Year One seat covers is that the guy bought the door panels and everything from them so I figured I better stay with them. Price was the same. I bought a few interior and misc stuff from The Parts place. They have been good to deal with so far. Inline Tube has been excellent to deal with.

Powder coat is great stuff when done right. I have built many MX race quads and almost always powder coated them.

Yes I can take a pic but the car is on the hoist right now and it is very difficult to squeeze in there. I will see what I can do though maybe later this week.

Scott, great looking car to start with. The way you are going at it I am sure it will be very nice. One suggestion on parts is to look on ebay. I just purchased a dual gate from The Parts Place that I am sure I could have purchased the identical one from them on eBay 15 percent less. Just sayin check all sources.

Thank you Scott I really appreciate it. Whenever you have the time and the chance would be great.

Sampson is correct, sometimes The Parts Place puts stuff on eBay a little bit cheaper. They have a complete rallye pack gauge setup for $509 for everything, and if you price it out its about $50 cheaper.

Frame is back from the powdercoater. Looks awesome. Been waiting on box # 4 of 4 from Inlinetube. It was supposed to be here last Friday but I tracked it and FedEX returned it because it was damaged. I got a call from Inlinetube today and they said FedEX exploded two paint cans inside the box. All my parts were blue. Oh well, at least my frame is all chassis black.

It actually did not sound like the normal Cherry Bomb sound. It actually sounded good. I don't think I will put those back on though.

Hi Scott,

Looks like you are making great progress. I found Ground up is a good source for a few GM A body cross over parts. Cheaper than some of the Olds venders.

I went with PUI but that is why they are almost done. I am having an issue with one of the seats. You can see in the picture the lines are different. I have to call them to see what they are going to do about it. The reason I went with them is because the door panels and everything else was already bought thru PUI. I will see how they are going to handle this.

Called YearOne who sold me the PUI seat covers and they said they will ship out a new pair ASAP. When I am done with the installation I am to send the defective covers back. That was easy.

Scott,
Did you put the conical washers back behind the buttons? You need those to help prevent the buttons from popping off.

Scott - What body shop in Michigan are you getting it painted at? I am also in Michigan and am probably a year or two out from a new paintjob, but it never hurts to get recommendations.
