A large Phillips pan head self tapping screw is used to hold the original grills together. This same Phillips pan head screw is used to fasten the grills to the plastic head light extensions.

FWIW, I have been told that this style of screw will not work with the reproduction grills.

thanks

Thanks guys for the help with the information for the pan head screw, the grills are NOS, so the pan head screw should work. What is the correct finish of the pan head screw?

All three of mine were phosphate plated from a March of 1970 production, built at the Fremont plant.

FWIW, I believe INT sells these screws in a bright shiny clear zinc plating.

The philips head screw with the sheet metal threads is correct. Patton would know.

13 months since last reply...time flys!

So it has been a while since my last post....about 13 months! Not much has been done to the car since all the paint and body were finished. I sent the alternator off to Patton for restoration and it seems to be quite the project, about a million cracks. However, it seems as if it has welded up nicely. Here are a few pics to appreciate the sheer amount of time. Cannot wait to see the finished product!
Power Steering pump and starter are next.....then it will be time to tackle the wiring harness!

pics of the the body completed

First photo is of my taking it home last July and the other two are pics of the car sitting in the garage. Slowly but surely I am getting back to this project. Installing the wiring harness is next, I just need to decide which company I am going with. Need to get going with the power steering pump, starter, and the dual gate shifter. Those items need to be sent out for restoration. Interior and Top will follow after that.

SS1 wheel restoration has begun.

W

Used 0000 steel wool to clean up the spokes and prepare for masking.

Painters tape and an razor blade to protect the spokes

Working on SS1 wheels. Brighten up the spokes with some steel wool and will then clean up the rest of the rim. Centers to be painted flat black and the rest of the rim in a semi gloss.

Progress Continues

Suspension bolts in the rear tightened and torqued. (Done on a 4 post lift, with weight on the car). Original to the car driveshaft blasted, primed, filled, sanded and balanced. Original drive shaft stripes located and recreated.

Working on finalizing a few underbody details. Checking all suspension and steering bolts in the front.

Upholstery in progress!

Getting ready to load up into the trailer to go to Upholstery. First time out in the sun since taking it home from body and paint!

Convertible Top frame goes up and down, no issues. First time the frame has been up since 2012!

Seat frames blasted and looking good! Springs will be rebuilt and clips redone. Project moving along!

Rear seat frame will need a little more work than the front. Springs a little weaker. Should go back together nicely!

Inching towards the finish line

The car continues to make progress in Upohlstery. The header bow fought us for awhile, but the car looks great with the top on. First time in a decade since the car had a top on it!

Un-obtainium acquired! 3 Way Tee for the California NA9 emissions system. GM NOS!

NA9 California Carbon Emissions system hooked up with correct flat style spring clamps.

Elbow installed into air cleaner for the California 9AN system.

Trunk lid decals installed.

Engine compartment coming together. I’ve waited a long time to put the OAI air cleaner back on the car!

Looking just great. 👍
I love white interior cars. There was a 70 SX near my house when I was a kid that was Rally Red with a white top and white interior. I bet you are super happy how it is turning out. Cool story. Cool car.

OAI Foam

The OAI top and foam were purchased NOS about 12 years ago out of Virginia. I had to save my nickels for that one 😎.

Meticulous restoration, however I thought the washer jar cap on a ’70 car was plain and free of inscriptions?

I dont know so I ask: What side should the bottle be on? Ive seen them on driver’s side also. Does ac make a difference? I’ve seen Original cars with no ac on the passenger side and this one has ac and its still on passenger side. Do they ever end up on driver’s side from the factory?

Photos from MCACN

Cannot say enough about the MCACN show. Lots of fun to show my car off next to some incredible cars.

Brought home from the hospital in 1982 in this W30.

The NOS front bumper just fits so well on my car!

Great group of judges to work with at MCACN 2022. Some easy tweaks and a few bigger ones, but on the right track with my car.

Learned a lot from the judges, work to do to correct the trunk compartment and areas of splatter paint. Underside reveals too much pitting on the differential. I’ll pull the differential out for a cosmetic makeover before next year.
