1966 442 with 69 455 - adding Air Conditioning

Good morning all,

I am looking to add a "factory" or at least factory appearance air conditioning system. Has anyone done this project? Degree of difficulty?

I would be interested in an aftermarket kit if I could use the correct interior vents.

Another caveat to the project is the motor a newer 455 so a complete original kit may not work.

I just posted a long winded summary of my experience of doing something very similar. My 67 had factory air, so that is a bit different, but you may find some of it helpful. The Vintage Air compressor and bracket kit fit 330-455, so no worries there.. BTW, the V.A. kit is probably 40-50 pounds lighter than stock.

Thank you Tim, that is good info.

Did you order a custom kit for VA? I didn't see a 66-67 kit available.

Also, were you able to use factory style vents and locations?

Vintage Air does not offer on 'official' kit. I knew the Chevelle has the same firewall as a Cutlass, so I started there. I did a lot of research and reading before making the call, but it worked out OK. I did use factory dash vents for the outer locations, I made one to replace the center vent, as mine was broken. My car had factory air, so the vents were already there for me to use. I chose the Gen IV custom kit, it is all electronic control and the latest tech they offer. I'm not so thrilled with the universal kit, but you might find it a viable option, since you won't have the massive firewall hole to block off like I did. You may also be able to start with a Chevelle non-factory air kit and then just mod your dash for the ball vents. The center vent is just a plastic block off in the dash and easily replaced with a vent.
