Insalling cupholder inserts into '72 Cutlass console lid
Has anyone here done or contemplated installing shallow depth cup holder inserts into the top of their '70-72 console door?
My thinking is a shallow depth insert of maybe an 1" or so top-mounted into the lid would leave enough underside clearance from the inside wall and key latch area to allow the door to still open, while still leaving ample storage space underneath. .
The insert lip could be glued (or screwed into place from the top side of the lid with small security screws for at least some added protection when the lid is locked).
Might be worth a thought if I ever come across a cheap spare door to mock the install up with.

I once had a console in a Monte Carlo with a broken door. I made a simple two hole cup holder from some pine wood. Painted and stained, and velcro to attach.
You have a good idea, but you might want a deeper/wider cup holder...IMHO.

I agree a deeper insert would be better to hold a cup in place but not sure how deep it can be before it interferes with the console door operation (opening/closing). I'd guess between 1-2" deep at most would be best range.

Open console lid, insert cup into the console compartment, wedge a towel or something next to it to hold it upright while laying down 11s
Ive done this a few times. IMO that location on top of the lid is asking for an elbow to knock it off.

all good input for thought
I'm fine cutting into a console door if the end result is nicely executed. I don't however think a top-mounted insert can be too deep or it won't allow the door to open/close properly due to the bottom hitting the side of the console as the lid pivots.
If I can mock something up similar in dimensions to the door (or find a cheap original to work on, I'll experiment to see how it might work out.

Back in the 80s I used Rubbermaid cup holders that were similar to this in my 1970 Supreme. They stayed in place (even with my driving) and were big enough to hold a can or bottle in a coozie. Plus they didn't get in the way and weren't visible from a vehicle in an adjacent lane.
