GM Steering Column Interchange/swap list - Sticky?
Ok, so I have a 72 cutlass with a non-tilt auto column. I want to put in a tilt column. What actually fits? Super easy - any 69-72 a body GM column. Those are all pretty much snapped up now, or people want lots of money for them. Heck, I can even order a new repro one for like $800.
How about not so easy but less money? Can I use a 73-77 A body column? I'm not worried about the simple wiring, and would get the plug from the donor car. Is the length, dia, bolt up, etc close enough? Has anyone done this, and can give a real answer? It looks like it should work, but I don't know.
What about a 70-81 F body column? Good, bad, indifferent? Does anyone know?
If I prefer signal stalk dimmer switch, can I use a 77-90 B body column in a 69-72 A body? I have read that It should work, but no one that said "Yes, it does" Once again, length, fitment, etc?
I am pretty sure that I cannot use a 78-87 G-body or 88-98 truck column, but I don't know that. Can anyone comment?
Anything can be made to work with enough time and money, but I'm looking to go to the junkyard - say "I want that one!" hand the man 20 bucks and spend a hour extricating it. What should I point to?
If we get good solid answers, can we make it a sticky?
If I was a 64-68 person, I think I would just order a gm tilt column from summit for about $250.

Yes, it will fit! We used one on our 1972 Vista Cruiser because the original one had a lot of faults in it. Prices were wild for the 1969 to 1972 tilt columns, I researched and found out that the 1973 to 1977 A-body at least would fit. Use your original lower telescoping shaft that meets up around the firewall. This is the article that really helped us. Our column came from a 1975 Cutlass. http://www.hemmings.com/magazine/mus...s/1745706.html
