That is the old school Oldsmobile logo. I think they used it pre-WW2. Someone can give you specific years I'm sure.

Oldsmobile resurrected that shield logo in the 1980s. The one in the OP's first post was broken out of the hood ornament used on 1984-85 Olds full size cars.

That logo was originally used on the Curved Dash and through the mid-1920s. It was resurrected in the 1980s, which is where the OP's item comes from.

Here's some useless information on the use of that logo in Olds history.

Also found on 1983 Ninety Eight. note the inlay of red. I remember this ornament from my 1983 Regency Brougham. I believe only the D88 Royale and Royale Broughams got this ornament. Lesser D88's got a different one.

That's the same logo, but the actual part has a subtle difference from the one that the OP and I posted photos of - besides the red inlay. Note that the post that the shield sits on has a square cross section on this "red" version. The silver version has a cruciform cross section post. Oh, and the "Oldsmobile" banner runs downhill on one and uphill on the other.

Point taken on the post. BUT, if you compare apples to apples the emblem is exactly the same. Yours is simply from the back side (as you know these emblems can twist around easily without damaging them); check the upper casting and you'll see what I mean. Those red inlays were notorious for coming off leaving simply a pot metal surface.
