Is there a thread on CO discussing the seat belt tag information or anywhere else. I have searched CO and found none. Haven't found much if anything anywhere else.

Wayne, I'm not aware of a thread yet. But if you have a set of belts your unsure of you might post a picture of the tag and see if anyone can key them out for you.

Here's a general answer about seat belt tags as it relates to date codes. Each seat belt, whether it has a male or female attachment point at the end, has a sewn on tag, usually white, that will have one or two numbers, a letter, and then two numbers on it, all in black. The first number will indicate the week of the year, starting with the first week of each calendar year being "1". Then there will be a letter, A, B, C, D, or E. That indicates the day of that week, A being Monday thru E being Friday. The last two numbers will indicate the calendar year. For example, 9 E 68 = ninth week of 1968, Friday of that week.

As to whether the first week of the year is a partial week or the first full week, I don't know.

What Randy said the week number first. From what I've read, the letter is the belt company or plant. There were quite a few companies that made them, Irving, Robbins, Hamill, General Safety...I forget. The model # standard, deluxe, etc. Finally the year. I've got some info in my bookmarks, Camaro...but interesting! I'll add it in a minute...

Thanks for the information. It all helps. I found the Camaro information very interesting. So one would have to compare the tag information definition to the presumtive build date of the car in question for the seatbelts to be correct for the car. Interesting information on Hamil was that they were the producers of the deluxe seatbelts and that could be verified on their model number which should start with a (1).

So I would read this tag number:

Hamill 1967
39 E 66
Model 120

Built 39th week of 1966 at plant E and are deluxe version. "20" must mean something? What does "Hamill 1967" mean. Maybe it means built for the 1967 productio on the 39th week of 1966?

Right, probably built for 67. The 39th week is maybe the 9 or 10th month (Sept/Oct). GM's changeover for year model was like July/August. Then there was the webbing change around that time, too. I used to be really interested in nitpicky stuff. And...it's always good to have general knowledge. That's why I like that Camaro article, it explains a lot about the belts and the changes, like the webbing, the ends of the belts that bolt to the floor, etc. Now you can just buy the tags and sew them on. You can put 72 belts on and get 71 tags if you know all the codes. Very few people really understand the codes, numbers, differences and timing of parts. I'll look for the other article I have.

Looking forward to the other article. This is interesting stuff. So what would one estimate a build date to make up some tags. How does that work with the build date on the cowl tag and or the vin number. Fun stuff. Enjoying it and thanks for the in put.

For example on date codes:

My car was Lansing-built around the first of January 1970.

The belt codes are 42E69 and 48E69, which seems reasonable.

For the third seat belts, the code is 31AZ1. I'm not sure what happened there, but I'm the second owner and the first owner only had the dealer work on his car.
