'70 Cutlass Shift Lever End Assembly?

I have a '71 tilt column shift in my '70 and want to change the shift lever to the correct '70 shift lever with fluted metal handle and woodgrain-look end cap.

How is the shift lever end cap and metal handle attached to the shift lever? Is there a threaded washer nut that fits inside the hollowed out rim of the rubber end cap?

The '70 fluted metal shifter handle is shorter in length (about 3/8") than the smooth shifter handle on the '71/'72.

There should be a pin at the base of the shift lever. Remove that pin, change levers, install pin, good to go. Five minutes.

Yes, I know how the whole shift lever is removed/installed from the column. My question is: how is the handle end of the lever removed/installed? The pictures are of the handle and end cap for the shift lever.

You could get the one year only pulse wiper option shift lever!

Actually, it's pressed on. The end of the lever is splined and the **** just presses on over the splines.

Thanks Joe. What holds the end cap on?

I found this pic of a burnt shift lever (posted by oldspackrat) which appears to show the shift lever handle end with a shoulder rim. If that is the case, the shoulder rim would squeeze into the cone-shaped opening of the rubber end cap?

But the shoulder rim end of the lever would/may be wider in diameter than the fluted metal **** to be pressed on?

Does the pulse wiper shift lever require a special wiper motor, or any special solenoid, etc.?

Thank you to oldspackrat for this illustrative pic showing the splined end of the shift lever as Joe P. described.

The rubber woodgrain (on '70) end cap may snap onto the end of the ****. There's a rim under the outer edge of the cap.

The optional pulse wiper does require a specific wiper motor. I have only ever seen one of them and it was burnt up on the inside.

To complete my own thread for anyone who may do this ...

The ASM shows an "insert" between the fluted shift lever sleeve and the rubber wood grain end cap (or "pad" as it is called in the diagram). The insert has a cone-shaped end which fits into the underside of the end cap and holds in on to the end of the lever assembly. (No glue.)

If you have a '70 column shift lever and need a correct appearance '70 tilt column shift lever (they're different), you can swap the sleeve and end cap from the '70 shift lever and install on a '71 - '72 tilt column shift lever.
