Shifter lever connection

My shifter lever has never worked ever since I got my 72 cutlass. I pulled the speedo and i see the clip but I don’t see where to attach it. What am I supposed to be looking for guys?

It appears you are missing the cable that clips to the shifter collar on the column... May look something like the one in the photo below...

Yeah I don’t have that piece. Do I attach that from the inside before I mount the gauge? It’s such a tight squeeze. I can’t imagine getting the Speedo cable connected and then somehow connect long that cable .

That is not how the shift indicator link is connected on the 68-72 cars. The diagram is in the STEERING chapter of your Chassis Service Manual. The steering column outer tube has a square hole below the speedo. This hole lets you see the inner shift tube that rotates when you move the shift lever. A clip snaps into a smaller hole in the shift tube. A hook attaches to this clip with a sheet metal screw and this hook is what the lower end of that wire link in the first photo attaches to.

Here's some pictures of the clip Joe's describing attached to a 70-72 steering column. You might check the location on your column to see if its still there. John

Sorry for the confusion... Had a senior moment and was thinking of my G-Body shift selector setup and not the 72... Chassis manuals are definitely your friend, I should have double checked my sources before posting...
