1968 Cutlass Auto Console Shift ****
Hello - can one of the experts here explain to me how to remove the wood shift **** from my 1968 Cutlass console mounted shifter? I would like to change the lights within and swap out the stainless panel with a new one.

Unscrew it. Once you do that, you'll have to drive out the spring pin that holds the finger grip to the lever before you can take the top plate off.

Thanks Joe - just to be clear - just grasp the wood **** and turn it to the left?
I only ask to make sure - the **** appears to be very tightly seated - don't want to damage anything

Eat you Wheaties first. Keep in mind that the **** probably hasn't been unscrewed in the last half a century.
