Fixing The "Sticky Steering Wheel" Syndrome

For those who have an Olds with the soft-grip steering wheel that looks like this:

There is hope for your sticky steering wheel!

Once a year, I clean it thoroughly with undiluted Purple Power (use the cleaner of your choice) and coat it completely with 303 Aerospace Protectant. Then I let it "marinate" thoroughly into the vinyl and "'rubberized" parts of the wheel for 24+ hours, wipe it down and I'm good to go for another year of no sticky, grimy feel.

Not my car in the photo, by the way.

The stickiness is outgassing of volatiles in the plastic material. This is very common with the four spoke sport wheel. A far easier solution is to wipe the wheel down with pre-cleaner solution from an auto paint store. This will not harm the plastic and completely and immediately removes the stickiness. Pre-Sol is one brand name. Be sure to use the old style solvent-based cleaner and not the new water based stuff. Goo-Gone and similar products are the same thing in a smaller and more expensive consumer-sized container.

Thanks for the alternate suggestion, Joe!

But post-clean-up (using whichever product), I still suggest applying the 303; I've tried it with and without 303 and use of the protectant seems to postpone the outgassing effect for a longer period of time --- in my experience, about one year.
