Do I need a s-wheel puller for my 70 C/S wheel removal?

I want to upgrade my steering wheel. Is it just 4 bolts, and we're off, or do I need a puller to get the stock wheel off? It is a 70 Cutlass Supreme, with the stock wheel. Does the rubber/plastic cover just peel back? Any other tips? I want to install the 4 spoke 442 type wheel. Thanks

Use a puller. Fabricate spacer tubes if necessary, to hold the puller upright whilst pulling.

You can use either a steering wheel puller or a harmonic balancer puller.

The horn pad should be held on by two screws/bolts from the back side of the wheel, one in each arm. They're normally phillips, but tend to get replaced with god-knows-what over the years. Might have a hex head.
Once the pad is off, remove the horn connector (push and turn), remove the retaining nut (it's tight), then use a puller. Puller is a must - these columns get a good press fit on the wheel.
Make sure you get all the fiddly bits to get the horn to work with the sport wheel.

Thanks all, and for the detailed how-to OddB, much appreciated. I think I heard I can free-rent/borrow a puller at Auto Zone. Gonna try that before buying one,......probably a one-time usage.

I have had the puller tip over sideways on a tough pull. If it tries that, a good solution is to fabricate tubular spacers between steering wheel surface and puller arm, where the two bolts are that secure puller to wheel. Often the wheel end must have a relief to clear some protrusion. Then center everything hand tight, tighten the arm to wheel bolts well- making sure you have at least 3-4 turns into the steering wheel. Then apply the forcing screw and if it does not extract right away, tap the end of the forcing screw. Tighten and tap until she comes off.
