1972 Cutlass Hurst Dual Gate Shifter Questions
Hello-
I am in the process of fixing up my 1972 Cutlass and want to install a Hurst dual gate shifter. Have a couple of questions regarding this.
1. What years was the Hurst dual gate shifter the same for Oldsmobile. I heard 1970-1975 shifters were same, just different brackets and top plates?
2. I see The Parts Place offers a complete Dual Gate unit for $600.00. Anyone have any experience with this shifter from them, is it aftermarket china crap or is it still made by Hurst and is it idenicle to the original?
3. Are there any other dual gate shifters that are compatable to the 1972 Oldsmobile Hurst Dual gate, such as Pontiac or other era GM cars that can be made to work by changing brackets and top plate, etc. ?
I want to learn as much as I can with this project and not buy junk without overspending on the wrong shifter. Figured many other Olds fans would have some great input. Thanks for any help in advance. It is much appreciated!

70 71 72 would be the same , The parts place and original parts group inc
also has a new set up ad for other makes the pontiac has a straight shifter handle and olds has a curve to it at least in the a body floor pan that would
work with your car.

Many many years ago I picked up a 1968 GTO dual gate. I wacked the 1970 Olds console to make it wide enough for the much wider top plate. Looked kinda tacky, but I didn't know any better...
So you might check the width if you come across anything that's not made for the Oldsmobile. John

As Joe noted, the stick has a different shape between the Poncho and the Olds, but the top plate in 68/69 was the same size, as far as I can tell. They had different fake wood applique's, though.

I purchased one from The Parts Place. Beforehand, I inquired into it. They told me that they had purchased all of the NOS parts that Hurst and anyone else (most) had, and these were assembled from those. Once I recieved it, I compared it to my original one that needed restored. I could not tell any difference between the two whatsoever. I'm happy with it.

DO you have any pictures of this shifter installed in your car?
I built a car for my dad, and he wants me to install a dual gate shifter for him.
I'd rather keep the bench seat in my car. So the setup from parts place seems pretty good.

If you put yours in the for sale section, these things sell like hot cakes!

Do you know if the 70 top plate will work with the 68 GTO HDG in terms of the actual gates and not the size of the plates themselves?

70 would have the neutral safety switch mounted on the shifter. 71-72 have it on the column. When I converted my car from column shift to floor shift I just used the column mounted switch since the 70 switch is hard to find and not cheap.

thx 4speed455 thats exactly the info i needed ... I thought the switch was missing on the nice 71 72 unit i have but was able to make a good 70 unit by moving the bracket and neutral safety switch from a true 70 unit i just purchased.
