I watched that sell last week. It had lots of pitting covered by the poor paint job but I still thought it would go a little higher.

Pretty easy to tell in person - the lettering will be soft JB weld. You can stick a pin in it.

The one on eBay was the real deal. Chris engraved the underside of his with his initials. Also an original had the boss pressed into the intake, where his had a nut on the underside.

Did you check the sellers comments? They also have the rest of the engine, transmission and rear end they will be selling too. And if I understand it this is a charity seller? I wonder what happened to the rest of the car?

When I bought my 69 H/O in 1981 (for $1500 in beautiful downtown Burbank), it was missing the original intake, carb, air cleaner, and outside mirrors. The original short block was long gone, but fortunately it did come with the D heads. A few years later, I saw an ad in the Recycler for a 69 H/O intake, carb, air cleaner, and mirrors in Orange County. Needless to say, I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough. Only cost me $600 for those parts, and I'd be amazed if those were not the original parts from my car. I mean, what are the odds that those same parts would have been removed from another 69 H/O in the SoCal area?

I have to ask; why did the '69 H/O have a different intake manifold? They were essentially "98" engines installed at Oldsmobile, right? I don't mean to over simplify it but it is only a cast iron intake; Why a special casting?

Actually, it was a Toronado W34 short block with the W-30 D heads. This was the first use of the "dual ventilation" PCV system where both valve covers had breathers that fed from the air cleaner housing and the PCV valve was on the intake like the 70-72 W-30 cars. The H/O was the only 1969 Olds with this setup, so the intake was unique with that nipple, but with the divorced choke pocket. The 1970-72 iron intakes had the blank spot for the nipple (and used it on the MT 442 motors) but used a hot air choke.

Thank you for that Joe. I read somewhere that they were "98" engines but it was probably 10 - 15 years ago and I've no idea where. From what I remember the salient point of the article was that Oldsmobile actually installed the engines and not Hurst.

Yes. We all used to believe the story that Demmer installed the engines, but when you think about it, it would have been pretty difficult to get the cars from the end of the Olds assembly line to the Demmer facility without motors.

In addition, without the engine in place, they wouldn't have been able to install the trans, driveshaft, crossmember, e-brake cables, exhaust, power steering, A/C, cooling system, or test any of that or the wiring for function before shipping to Demmer.

I know the seller and "knew of" the buyer. The buyer was willing to go as high as 10K to obtain the intake. The seller was absolutely blown away at what he was willing to pay.

I found an J intake at a CA junk yard, I bought it on the spot. Then it disappeared in shipping. The junk yard apologized and returned my money.

The '68 H/O's started with "98" engines from the H/OCA paperwork I saw.
