I need help Id'ing this engine/trans

Hello,

I just picked up a complete Rocket engine and trans at an action and was told it's a 55 or 56 Olds rocket. I'm not familiar with the early Olds engines at all and was wondering if you would help me decode this stuff. The verdict is still out if I'll keep it or sell it and use the money to work on other projects. Problem being is I have no idea what it's worth as a whole or parted out.

Here's the numbers:

The block on the back "bellhousing": CFO 257 a large 6 with 563922 under the six. It might be 568922 it's hard to tell. Also, on the driver's side of the bellhousing reads N3x. The passenger side reads 03x.

Heads: large 7 over center exhaust port. Under the cover on the top left corner reads CF 225. Under the cover, top right corner reads a larger 3 and 563974.

The four barrel intake: 563966

The trans has a slanted pan on it and reads: 8515013 8-26 cast into the passenger side of the case.

The carb is by Carter and the metal tag reads: 206s H4 This might be off a little, the tag is bent over the edge.

Any help would be great!

Thanks,

Karl

I cannot find these numbers for an Olds block from '53 to '62 . Plus i thought Olds used Rochester carbs that year anyways. I would like to see a picture if you can supply one

'54-'56 trans.
'54-'56 Rocker covers.
'49-'55 distributor.

I know nothing about the numbers.

Could have been made by Rochester or Carter, but they were/are the same carb .

How do you know it is a '56, not a '55?

Olds cast the year numbers in the rear of the Blocks beside the Dist. They used Single Digit Numbers and the Blocks changed in appearance by the Decade so they didn't get confused with other Displacements. Things changed through time but this identifying mark was used in the '50s & '60s.

Ok. So now I have an idea of what I've got. Now, what would be a fair price to ask of such an item?

I've decided to focus on the 455 I've already started with and put the money into that. I'd be interested in a trade for things I need for the 455 such as a trans, heads, aluminum intake, carb...

I'll look and see were to better post this.

Thanks for all the help people!

Post it in the parts for sale forum. You might want to post as a for sale or will trade for 455, parts, etc
