What are the codes and tags that are correct for a 1970 442 w-30 4 spd radiator? Is there an embossed code on the tanks along with brass tags that are the correct for that year and model? How do you I.D. the correct radiator?

I believe we need the rear end ratio to say for sure what the radiator code should be. But yes, there's codes stamped into the tanks. I'll post pictures of some examples. On this radiator the big tank is code CA and the small tank is code IA

Thanks for the info, the car has a 3:91 rear end and I have y eyes on a rad but not sure if correct? It is a 4 spd rad though due to the lack of trans cooling inlets.

The reference I'm looking at says you should have a 2.70" thick core heavy duty radiator. The code should be EC, part number 3017101.

If it doesn't have the trans cooling inlets then it's NOT the correct style radiator for your car if you're worried about at least having the correct appearance.

OK so the correct radiator would have the trans cooling inlets but just blocked off for 4 spd?

What Eric said....yes. You can get new plugs for the inlet and outlet if the plugs are missing. ILT sells some.

Here are some pix of what I have. Im thinking maybe another GM a-body perhaps? I would think 4 spd due to lack of trans cooling inlet/outlet? Maybe chevelle, GTO or Buick? Other than appearance (codes/stampings) this seems like an exact fit and would perform the same correct? Anybody know what exactly this would be for?
After some searching Im coming up with 1970 BB chevelle. el camino 4spd HD cooling LS5,6

Would the IF, CI tanks be correct codes for 1970 W-30 4-spd, 3:91?
I see IF seems to be the embossed code for the smaller tank.

Yes, you got it. This radiator was in my father-in-law's car. Although it was converted to an automatic transmission, this is the correct 3.91 4 speed radiator from what I've been told. Eric can chime in to confirm. I verified somewhere before also, I think from the assembly manual.

Yes, I am very sure that the EC was the original radiator to that car.

I talked to Spectra today and they told me they do sell the cores for some radiators but only to radiator shops and that's all the info they gave. I would like to try my hand at re-coring and if I can't do it then off to rad shop. I would think in today's day and age of internet etc... it makes things more obtainable. Ill keep looking around.
One of these days when I get the time and a bit more organized I'll show you guys what I've been working on.

Just be careful with radiator shops, lots of bad one out there. Also, most of the new cores come with a strange top and bottom rail. Tell them you want the core ordered with no rails and to use the old ones. If they can't do it then find a new radiator shop. My radiator shop will recore a 4 core radiator with the old rails for around $500. Most of the time it is less. They get the cores made in Michigan somewhere.

Go to Carrolls used auto parts in Lexington Mass. Ask for Johnny they have been doing vintage rad recoring for decades and do them right, he is a vintage car guy. Correct rails etc. I have used them for over 30 years , every radiators was done perfect

That looks like a great project and worthy of the concourse restoration. I hope to see the finished product soon.
On another note: that guy who has your original block, just contact him and say, "I know you think the block is worth a lot of money but to be honest its only worth the most to me because of the number stamped on the side and because it blew up in my car, I am willing to give you x amount and if that works fine, if not fine, thanks for your time.
Its really all you can do, don't get caught up in his angling.

Sorry to bring this up again but I need the block off plugs for the auto trans cooling lines. I looked at ILT website and couldn't find anything. Does anyone have a pic of what they look like? or maybe of an original 70 4spd A-body with original Harrison radiator?

ILT PN is INL10677 64-71 GM Radiator Plugs - $18 pair (includes washers that go under the plugs).

I have one of their paper catalogs here....it's dated January 2013. I just double checked the PN I posted above and it is correct.
