1970 W31 Oddity In The PIM

In researching the PIM (or assembly manual), I have found a part listed that is specific only to W31 - and it isn't the balancer or the intake manifold:

Clutch Pedal Bumper - On section 7 page 102 the little bumper that attaches to the pedal support bracket lists 2 different part numbers - 404510 for all except 35W31, and 404185 for 35W31. Anyone know what the difference might be, and why would there be a need for a different part number for W31 only?

I have seen this in the 1969 PIM as well.

I will check my bumper one day to see if a special one is in my car or not.

I recently had this discussion with Patton, and as I mentioned to him is the fact that the w31 used a different clutch set up, therefore, using a different clutch bumper. I discovered this years ago when parting these cars out. To explain this a little further, the bumper is very thin to accommodate the throw of the clutch. If I recall correctly, the clutch used in the w31 was Chevrolet unit belonging to the L-88.

The 1968-70 W-31s use a unique 10.5" HD clutch and pressure plate that is not shared by any other Olds. Part number for the clutch disk and pressure plate assembly is 3886066. And yes, this same 10.5" clutch WAS used on L-88 Corvettes, apparently to reduce rotational inertia so the engine could rev more quickly.
