Vin tag placement

cant seem to find a pic or any threads with this answer.
Is the tag supposed to be on the top or under the attachment tabs or does it make a difference.

Well, one of the guru's will have to speak up to say for sure. I checked a 1968, 1969 and two 1971's they all had it on the underside of the dash tabs. But I don't know if that's true with all or just happens to be what I've got.

Thanks guys, so far looks like its I have to move it under to make it correct. I had to replace the dash so I took the tag from my original and should have asked first before putting it back, it was about 4 years ago and probably the only thing I didn't take a picture of. Mind is sure not what it use to be.

There should also be a plastic surround on the upper dash to frame in the VIN tag so the rivets don't show.

Any truth to the rumor that Lansing built cars were pop riveted from underneath? Here's a pic of mine.

That has been my experience, yes.

I believe the assembly manual has a great deal of specific information about the VIN tags, down to the exact size of the tag, and the specific shape of the characters, such as the flat-top "8".

The assembly manual specifically says that rivet head orientation is optional.

since the tag is installed under the tabs the pressure from pushing from below might make it easier to install. thoughts????

If most are from the bottom then in the interest of not creating doubt later you should just copy the norm. Apparently ebay is selling the rivets.

The story that daveh has told said that the windshields were in place in Lansing so the VIN tags were installed from underneath. BOP plants installed the windshields last so the VIN tags rivets were installed from above

BOP is an acronym to describe the divisions of GM
B-Buick
O-Oldsmobile
P-Pontiac

When I worked in vehicle merchandising back in the late 70's the acronym was longer
BOPCK
The C is Chevrolet
The K was Cadillac

Now the GM corporate branding is a Chevy, Buick, Cadillac or GMC.
Gone are Oldsmobile (sad), Pontiac and Saturn (yay). Less choice, it's all about profit and jobs IMO.
