455 valve issues

Hello all.
I have built a 455 with C heads, the engine kit that I brought was one from Enginetech. It came with a cam that is a stage 3 cam, ES176R. The spec sheet said that I may need a 0.50 longer push rod. After putting it together and cranking the engine it seems that i have a valve pecking noise. So after calling Enginetech they told me that they don`t sell an application for this issue. Can anyone help me with this issue.
Background on the engine is it was bored 0.30 over and new exhaust valves and guides intake valves were reusable. it seems that the new exhaust valves are about .032 lower than the intake valves. I don`t have adjustable rocker arms I stayed with the factory application. just bolt down and be done with it .Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Welcome. The info on your cam says this:

Stage 3 high performance. Use hydraulic flat followers. Base circles smaller than stock. May require longer push rods. .050 Duration-232/232; Cam Lift -.296/.296; Lobe Center-110/118.
Apparently this is a reduced base circle cam. To properly gauge the needed pushrod length, you needed to do an engine mockup prior to final assembly in order to measure the correct pushrod length. Also, the valve tips should be all at the SAME height, and when using the stock rockers and pushrods, that height is specified in the factory Chassis Service Manual. It sounds like this engine was not assembled correctly or carefully. Sorry.

Thanks for the info , one other question I have in the center of the intake there are what looks like threaded holes. What is the purpose of these holes and should they have stud bolts in them to seal it off.

These holes are underneath where the carburetor sets.

The holes are used to secure the baffle, as shown in this photo. There is no need to plug the holes, but the baffle should be used unless you have an aftermarket oil deflector (which typically also use those holes for mounting).

Thanks again for the fast reply. The holes I`m referring to are actually in the bottom of the intake itself. Thanks

Hello once again i`m further in my engine build it`s in the car and runs but the engine has no vacuum for the brake booster. it`s very temperamental and i`m almost to the point of pulling the cam and using something else, I`m using the engine tech es176r camshaft in it. Should i have degree this cam or can i just time it straight up on the dots? I`m really bummed out about it The engine is bored thirty over and is using C heads and everything else is factory, thanks for any help.

Well that's not really surprising with a 232/232 camshaft. I think the cars that had that cam from the factory had manual brakes due to low vacuum.

If you can get it to run good with the radical cam then a vacuum pump is not uncommon for that exact issue. I happen to have a slightly used one by summit racing if interested? $269 new, yours for $125 plus shipping.

What would the "advertised duration" be for the 232/232 @ .050" ?

That cam will be fairly mild in a 455.
