serial/ VIN decoding
okay, so I ran the vin on my 1984 hurst olds and came up with the usual basic build stuff. what I was wondering is is it possible to know what number, out of the 3500 or so, my hurst olds is? and possibly any more information on it such as original buyer, and location...etc. thanks for any help!
VIN is: 1G3AK4790EM401638

Contact the GM Heritage Center. The Olds History Center in Lansing was absorbed by the Heritage Center when Olds closed in 2004.
They can probably give you the name of the selling dealer, original window sticker, and perhaps some of the other information you're looking for. They might not give you the name of the original buyer, if they have it, to protect the buyer's privacy.

Anybody know why they don't have Oldsmobile prior to 1977? Assume they just tossed them at some point for space....

This is one of the biggest "sadnesses" in the Oldsmobile hobby. Original selling dealer, original invoice, etc. information is just not available for the pre-1977 cars. If you find your car's build sheet, that can help as the delivered-to dealer is usually listed on it.
