Ram air

Hi. I am installing a OAI setup from scratch on my 1969 442. I bought the kit from The parts place. Of course they dont have installation instructions. Can anyone help me?

I'm in the same boat.......

Thanks for the info Joe. I have a .PDF version for my '68, but the page / figure for the OAI scoop installation seems to be missing. Seems that somewhere in the distant past I stumbled across some templates or measurements showing exactly where to cut the 4" holes for the scoops. But I can't seem to find it now. In the mean time, I'm using any reference photos I can find.

I'm adding the '68 OAI setup (also from TPP) to my 350-2bbl (it WILL be a 4-bbl in the not too distant future, but for now I'm using a carb adapter to fit it to my 2 bbl........go ahead and laugh). Any how, discovered I needed a new PCV vent tube from the air cleaner filter to the valve cover since the old one "twists" the wrong way. Now that I have the correct one, discovered that the air cleaner is sitting ~1" higher apparently because the tube is too short. I'll rig something for that until I get the engine rebuilt w/ a 4-bbl.

What HAS surprised me is, I purchased a new air cleaner "pie tin" since it is larger than the one used on the 2-bbl air cleaner. However, the chrome retainer from my 2 bbl is ~ 1" too small in diameter to retain the larger 4-bbl pie-tin on the 4-bbl dual snorkel air cleaner. I've shopped around and can find only one size retainer. Who makes a larger retainer for the 4-bbl pie tins?

Aye, description:

Air Filter Plate Chrome Retainer, 66-70 Toronado, 1968 OldsChrome plated retainer used to hold down the aluminum air cleaner top plates on 1968 Oldsmobile models and 1966-70 Toronado.
This implies that it fits ALL '68 Olds, including a 2 bbl 350 air cleaner. Well, I HAVE one of those already, and it is too small to clamp down the 4-bbl pie tin on a 4-bbl air cleaner. Without dimensions in the product description, I'm hesitant to spend money on something that might not work.

UNLESS, there actually ARE two different sizes of chrome hold-downs, and NOBODY repros the smaller one for the 2-bbl air cleaners. However, Fusicks also sells the 2-bbl pie tin, why would they not also carry a hold-down for that if it is, in fact, smaller than the 4-bbl hold-down? It doesn't make any sense.

If someone DOES have a FPR680, what is the diameter of it?

Maybe I'll just email Fusicks and ask.

That was quick:

Hi John,

The diameter of the FPR680 is 4 ½”.

Thanks,

Kevin
Fusick Automotive Products

I'm pretty sure the 2-bbl hold down measured only ~ 3.25". Once I confirm I'll be ordering the FPR680.

I'm hearing that the 68 and 69 under bumper scoops are different? The Fusick photos show a size change between years. Apparently the 69 version is better? Anyone have dimensions? I'd like to add OAI to my car and I would like the better design of the two.

'68 scoops are about 12 inches wide and '69 scoops are about 8 inches wide approximately but otherwise fit in the same location.

The 69 scoops are about a 1/2" taller than the 68 too (guessing 2" on the 68s, 2.5" on the 69s). 24 in^2 (68) vs. 20 in^2 (69). Maybe the '69s are a full inch taller, making them also 24 in^2. Hard to claim one design is more efficient or "better" than the other IMO.

Johnny, I am sure you are pretty close. I would think the size and CFM flow is comparable using the '69 scoops.
OP, use the scoops that are correct for your year.
..........Just my two cents worth.

I sold my '69 scoops so I can't compare them to my '68s.

My original thought was to use the '68 scoops for correctness. I guess there was a post about water getting sucked in that got me thinking.
