Question on mechanical fuel pump and fuel lines

Hello all,

I have a 72 cutlass convertible A body with a 68 455 in it - I have had bad luck with electric pumps and want to put a mechanical pump in it. The parts store wanted to sell me a three hose adapter pump - after a little reading it seems that there is an fuel inlet and outlet + a return fuel line for the pump? My car has two steel lines running down the frame - I assume one is the primary fuel line - but I believe the other is the carbon canister vapor line? So no fuel return line? If I only need a two line pump how do I determine what pump will fit / work? - also ... when Installing the pump - it currently has just a metal plate covering the hole for the fuel pump - when I pull that will oil pour out? (Newbie question I know...) so the seal on pump will prevent oil leaking? Any help / insight is appreciated - thanks in advance for all reply’s!

Joe

The second steel line in your frame is the return line. The vapor canister comes off the tank. The third line on the fuel pump would go to your carb. And no oil should come out of the fuel pump block off plate when removed unless the motor was running.

few questions - second steel line is *fuel* return line? Vapor canister comes of the *gas* tank? If so what kind of line is it if not steel? And third line on fuel pump goes to the fuel inlet on carb - then I assume 1st is primary from tank and second is fuel return? - thanks for your time!

Sorry, this is not correct. For a 1972 Cutlass, the 3/8 line is the feed line to the pump. The smaller line is the vent line to the charcoal canister that mounts behind the passenger side headlights. If the car had fuel return, it would have had THREE steel lines on the frame rail. If you asked for a pump for a 455, you got the three line pump. Get a pump for a 350 with two lines (one inlet, one outlet).

When you pull the plate make sure you have a fuel pump eccentric bolted to
the cam gear as shown here. You can see where the f/p arm rests on it.

since it’s a 1968 455 out of a toronado will a 72 350 mechanical fuel pump bolt right up no problem?

thanks Tru-Blue! First time doing a mechanical fuel pump - that helps tons to see what’s going on! ~ Joe

I also helps to roll the engine over where the eccentric is at it's lowest point
also as shown. This helps put less pressure on the pump arm when attaching
the bolt and nut if it has the correct bolt on top for the nut. There will be some resistance but that is normal.

thanks again! Are the pumps for 350s and 455s from 68 - 72 pretty much universal? No issues bolting them up?

They are pretty much the same, differences are a/c vs no a/c.

Don't get one for a Toro though. I think they are taller and may get in the way of the a/c brackets, not real sure.

Be sure you know that unlike Chevy motors, Oldsmobile pumps install with the pump body "up".

so both the fuel lines would connect on the top side? Is that correct Joe?
