Fatigue? Too many curls at the gym?

Seriously, hard to steer may be due to the gear box. I remember my brother-in-law tightened the screw on the gear box and it put too much tension, causing hard steering.

Low PS fluid, broken belt, or a kinked hose are other possibilities.

If the power assist seems to randomly come and go, check the pressure flow valve built into the outlet port of the pump (item #2 in the second photo). There is a spring with an adjusting screw and nut. I've had the nut loosen up, causing exactly this problem.

Joe hit the head of the nail...shocker. I just had Power Steering dot com (formally Chips) rebuild my box and pump. I told him what the pump was doing and he said it's the pressure flow valve. Its bad, dirty, or needs an adjustment. He found crud in mine. He rebuilt the box with the upgraded 12.7:1 high resistance feel gears and beefed the pump pressure up as well. He also said these old school Saginaw pumps run on Type F or Dextron 3 ATF. Do not use the thin clear crap. That's intended for later model cars and rack n pinion systems.
