Carb swap: that is the question.
Hi everybody, I recently bought a built in France 1956 super 88 Oldsmobile (everything stock and in good condition, engine is the 324 CID rocket) and I have some questions:

- when trying to run the engine without the air filter, I have a nice backfire with a 1 foot tall flame coming out of the carb (standart rochester 4 barrel) and the car stall. Is it normal or sign of engine problem?
- I need to rebuilt the carb (stock since 1956 but running well as i drive the car). Do I rebuilt the carb or swap it for a recent one.
- Concerning question 2, I have the opportunity to buy an edelbrock intake which accept 3 Ford 94 type carbs and another one (offenhauser) for dual 4 barrel carbs. What would you recommand?

Backfiring threw the carb. Is most likely a timing issue. Good chance the carb will have to be rebuilt. I don't recommend running without a air cleaner.
I would keep the setup you have know. Just get it running good. One thing is for sure you would want to get it running good before swapping to a one of the other setups.
