Is The AC Muffler Really Needed??
The AC compressor had been removed from My '72 442 convertible years ago and it sat in a West Texas cow pasture for many years. Unfortunately, mud daubers made homes in the open ac hoses including the AC muffler. I've cleaned and flushed the muffler as best as I could but I'm concerned that I didn't get all the mud out of the chambers inside. My new AC system will include the newer Pro6Ten 10-piston compressor. Here's my question, what was the purpose for the AC muffler? Is it really necessary? I'm thinking the Pro6Ten compressor, with 10 pistons, will have a smoother output than the original 6-piston A6 making the muffler unnecessary. I will need all new hoses anyway, and not concerned about originality. Can I just omit the muffler when I build the new hoses?

Why not just buy a new hose with a new muffler ?

The repo muffler assembly that Charlie linked to is $175 - ouch. If I buy the MasterCool crimping tool, can I replace the hose on my existing muffler? Is the #8 fitting off the muffler welded/braised on or can I cut off the old ferrule and crimp on a new hose with a replacement ferrule? Will a replacement ferrule slip over the existing hose barb on the muffler? The Crimping tool is $143 on Amazon, the fittings, hose and ferrules are about $25.

I need all the hoses for my AC system: total cost of the ready-made hoses is about $390 w/shipping. If I can fix my existing muffler and build the other hoses for the cost of the hose and fittings, I come out ahead financially. With fittings, hoses, and the crimp tool; I'm all in for around $260 and I can keep the correct compressor -mounted muffler. Plus, it's a good excuse to buy a new tool!
