71 Olds 350 Piston/valve Clearance
hello list, i have a 71 olds 350 with no. 7 heads and i had my heads machined .060 and im running .027 cometic head gaskets, giving me 60cc head volume. Im running Harland Sharp Roller rockers and a Engle .496/.512 hydraulic cam and lifters, id like to know if i should be concerned with checking piston/valve clearance. Ive read that Olds engines due to valve angle degrees are not prone to problems with piston/valve clearance like chevy 350s are. Can anybody tell me if they have any experience with a similar or exact type olds 350 build like mine and if you checked or had issues with piston/valve clearance?

You make no mention of your pistons!
Even with flat tops you should still have much room. Domes would be different.
Measure it, anyway. Be safe.
Use light checking springs (2 Toro lawn sprinkler return springs work nicely) in place of valve springs on the #1 hole, measure P/V clearance every degree following full lift on the exhaust, and every degree from heel to full lift on the intake as it opens (The piston chases the exhaust valve closed, intake valve chases the piston as it opens). Use a mag base with a dial indicator on the retainer, nothing else will be accurate when they near.
I doubt if you are even near trouble here, with .512 lift, even with a .060 cut.
Chevies have more of an issue due to that 23 degree valve angle (Oldsmobile has a flat 6 degree valve angle).
