495 Stroker Oil Pressure

Gents:
I am in the process of breaking in a 455 Olds stroker ( 495 DSS kit). The oil pressure gauge ( Olds gauge) shows the pressure dropping off slightly when I add some revs when it is already at partial throttle. When you ease off on the throttle the pressure goes back to where it originally was. A mechanical gauge is the process of being rigged up so that it can be related to actual pressure values. The oil pan is a 7 qt Milodon pan with the matching Milodon pickup. The oil pump is a high volume Melling oil pump. I have my own ideas on this but would like to hear from folks who had something similar and solved it.

I'd buy a name brand mechanical oil pressure and same for water temperature gauges. Do this before you start it again and pull the oil filter. Fill with oil a new NAPA Gold oil filter. Then cut open the filter you took off especially in the pleats. If you have metal, forget about starting it again, tear it down.JMO. DSS? Dave Smith? ?

Based on the paperwork that I got back with the car they would have added 8 lts ( roughly 7 US Qt).

The reason for using a larger oil pan is not to fill with more oil but to lower the level of the oil to prevent foaming from the crank. I your running a lowered pickup, drain 2 qts and see what happens.

A Melling high volume oil pump is not a high pressure pump. The pump as it comes will only produce 45 to low 50s pounds of pressure. To correct this you must call Melling and ask for the purple spring. No part number, just the purple spring.

Just off the top of my head.....
People have reported the oil pickup being too close to the oil pan floor and sucking it up tight to the pickup restricting flow. I have seen many oil pickups with a strap or some other device that restricts the pan from blocking off the pickup.
How far was your oil pickup from the pan floor?

So really, Melling doesn't have a PN for this...?

Well, the application chart says “Chevrolet”. Soooo. If it’s the same, great but other than the color there’s no indication this would be the spring to fit an olds oil pump.

Yeah that's not it.
I know this is an old thread but you can call Melling for the spring. OR all the new pumps are now coming with them in a separate package inside the box.
