1985 Delta 88 307 engine help

Hey so I have a 307 that wont pass smog due to the air filter system, theres a few hoses disconnected and a custom air filter installed; Anyone know a solution to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're gonna need an original air cleaner assembly. Both hoses pointed out connect to it.

Those hoses and pipe go to the stock air cleaner. The stove pipe is to pre-heat combustion air when the car starts cold. The other two hoses hook up to breather filters in the air cleaner IIRC.

They shouldn't be that hard to find. It's the same air cleaner for (V8) 82-85 Olds Delta/98, Buick LeSabre/Park Avenue, Pontiac Catalina and Chev Impala. Just tell the yard the snorkel has to be on the drivers side. Expand your search option.

I have 2 of them here that should work for you. Let me know if you don't find one locally.

Just a word of advice, the air filter housing isn't the reason it won't pass the AIR test.
Unless of course you are only failing the visual inspection.

If you are failing the sniff test, just mix the gas 50% with e85 or isopropyl alcohol before you bring it in.

You may have to start it on ether, and it may be a dog, but it will be clean as a whistle.

I agree with J

The stove pipe shouldn't matter once the engine warms up. The crankcase is venting to the outside, so less fumes are going into the carb thus it will run cleaner. The larger filter that is uninhibited by a metal can will help it breathe better as well.

I do, however, disagree to a point over the alcohol. I had a VW Bus that needed a smog check and I dutifully dumped a quart of isopropyl alcohol into the gas tank. The engine immediately quit running. It had about a half tank and my plan was to add the alcohol, fill up with premium, and pass the test. What I didn't realize that isopropyl alcohol you buy in the store is 30% water. If you can find the 99% stuff you'd be in good shape. And, add it to a full tank.

Anyway, got a 5 gallon can of gas and put in the Bus, and after a few miles it smoothed out enough to drive to the testing place, and it passed with flying colors. Evidently steam doesn't pollute

Slantflat, that's pretty funny.

The red bottles of HEET are 100% isopropyl so use those. Man, if I could run my car on water I'd save a ton.!
