1970 Cutlass Floor Jack lift point Rear
I have a rear sway bar and was wondering where to position a floor jack under the differential: either under the sway bar, or just on the rear edge of the differential to avoid the sway bar.
In the first case would the sway bar get distorted?
In the second case will the differential cover get distorted?

Someone may argue, but I've jacked up cars by the pumpkin all my life. Then put jack stands under the frame rails for safety and relieve a little stress on the diff. I would not ever lift by the sway bar.

X2 on the above, I've always jacked the rear by the pumpkin, but steer clear of the sway bar, the cover area. I put jack stands under the differential tubes or the frame just in front of the tires.

You should be able to catch a good portion of the pumpkin behind the sway bar, least wise on my 69 I'm able. There seems to be no problems jacking it there.
Having a jack with a lower, longer reach that lifts to a decent height is nice to have.
I use a round poly pad on my jack to avoid any damage as well.

Thanks guys. My sway bar runs right along the lowest point of the pumpkin and there is only about 2" between it and the rear cover, with the flange of the cover extending downwards. This leaves no room for me to put the jack head without hitting one of the cover flange or the sway bar.
In front of the sway bar the pumpkin slopes up too much for me to be comfortable putting the jack there.
I could put a block of wood between the sway bar and the cover flange.

Just checked mine as it happened to be jacked up now (also w/jackstands of course) and there was no problem jacking it under the pumpkin in front of the sway bar. No damage to the cover. Easy way to jack both sides up.
