My Terrible Experience with Holley's Fuel Sight Plugs

So recently I bought a pair of those acrylic sight plugs to look at the fuel levels in my Holley carburetor. I read the eBay seller's note on how to use them and how you are to just snug them and not to over tighten them. That is, install, adjust fuel level, and remove. I was determined to do just that. However, a few seconds after firing up my Olds, the head of both plugs popped out leaving me with the threaded portion in the sight holes. Scary! What in the hell I just did? Why not doing it the old fashion way? Why did I purchase these cheap plugs? Those were some of the questions that crossed my mind while looking at the broken plugs. I tried many ways to remove the thread fragments with no luck. Finally, both fragments fell in the carb's fuel bowls. I was speechless and mad. I could not believe how Holley endorses such cheap plugs and subject their customers to such worthless plugs. It was clear that the carb decapitated the plugs immediately after firing the engine. Anyways, it caused me the pain of removing my carb to take out the damn fragments. I had to wait a few days because I could not do the job the same night this incident occurred. Yesterday, we had a break from the last few days rain showers and I successfully removed the pieces, which were already gummy and partially dissolved by the fuel. You could take the risk of clogging your jets or worse yet be stranded somewhere. For some of us that are not mechanics, it would have been costly!! I ventured into it but it was scary!

You'd think these would be made with a fuel-resistant material since they will be exposed to fuel.

I also thought so, especially coming from Holley. The melting happened for about 5 days in the bowls. However, note that these plugs are just for adjustment and not intended to be permament. My complain is that the carb strangled both plug heads almost immediately after firing up the engine.

I am running a Quick Fuel carb on mine now. You can see the float levels very easily through the clear sight plugs. I've only ran it maybe 100 miles, but I like it so far.

Yes. I own a Holley Street Avenger 770 CFM and those come with glass sight plugs. Mine both cracked and were replaced with brass ones. Glass ones are fine, but not the plastic ones.
