1968 442 W36 stripe
Found this today, and thought it was a good reference as to how these stripes were applied at the factory. Joe Padvano really cleared this up for us a while back, thanks again.

These are the best 68 W36 and 442 number location pictures available:

I thought about having this factory kit reproduced. It has tells correct location and where to trim for each model. Do you think there would be any interest in a exact correct stencil with ? Im not thinking about this for a profit more to supply a correct stencil. Im tired of seeing wrong stripes and locations on 68s.

Does the kit locate the numbers too? I'm pretty sure there are other reproduction kits out there. I don't know if they are correct or not. Unfortunately the biggest problem isn't getting the stripe correct, it's putting the numbers in the right place.
bigblockolds (the one that posted the pics in the thread I referenced above) sent me those pics about 10 years ago too. They would be a nice addition to the stencil kit if the one you have doesn't locate the numbers.

Yes the stencil kit spells out the location of emblems on the paper covering, where to cut for specific models, yes it shows these stripes as being used on all Abodys, Cutlass S, Cutlass Supreme, F85, 442. I purchased this at the Nationals this year from a fellow that had purchased them from a closed out Olds dealership 30 years ago.

We both know I didn't do that stripe!!!! That's downright slander!!!! LOL. I tried to cover that stripe in black tape (still have the tape somewhere) and considered having it painted black instead. Then, I sold the car. The irony is that I think 2 or 3 others had that car in between me and you.

I have seen more incorrect W36 stripes than correct.

This has been my pet peeve for years. One of the worst offenses was at the 2009 OCA Nationals at Silver Springs. The best in class car was a 1968 "W-30" with the stripes and emblems clearly in the wrong place.
Even worst, at that Nationals EVERY car on the showfield with W-36 stripes had them in the wrong place (and thus clearly not factory-installed). Even worse, there was one 68 without stripes, but with the emblems in the rearward stripe location.
I spoke to the owner who admitted that he thought the car looked better without the stripes.

I know. I know. Just trying to have a little fun. I think everyone knows my comment was in jest.
I'm with Joe on this one. The way some of these stripes are applied are sometimes worse than the '70-'72 W-30 side stripe. Some good cars get ruined by the application of said stripes.

"Back in the day" all sorts of things were done to customize cars. Where are the spiderweb painted 2-tone roofs? Not everything has to be bone stock.
That stripe is well done and looks sharp!

That stripe must have been removed because it isn't there anymore. The stripe goes with the W-30 wheelwells you put in it. The car has only gotten better since you owned it. It has a 455/Tremec/12 bolt in it now and I drive it all over the place. I think you said it was a really great riding car in your opinion. One of the best if my recollection is right. It's now lowered an inch. You guys know how it is, the longer you have a car the better it gets because you improve it all along. I'll never sell this one.

OEM Stencil
rcktdoc/Greg,
I'm definitely interested in your stencil. I know that my stripe is incorrect (bought the vehicle that way) and want to do something about it. It is in roughly the correct forward/rearward location, but the dimensions are all wrong. The outer stripes, of both stripe and base colors, are too narrow.

I have seen the thread(s) here and other places and have saved the pics from some of those threads (red stripe on white fender - thanx to OP!!). I also have copies of the CSM, FBM, and AM, but would love to see and use the official version without having to pay someone else for an incorrect version.
Maybe this is something that can be uploaded to Wild About Cars? If not, I'm happy to defray costs of reproducing and/or shipping a copy of what you have. If this is of interest to you (copy/ship), you can either reply here or PM me.
Thanks to all contributors over the years who have helped my knowledge in this hobby to increase!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

There you go again. Next, I will have painted the air cleaner red, too. (Only kidding. Don't worry, I have thick skin.) Yes that car drove extremely well. I know you changed the drivetrain; for the better I might add. I could be mistaken on the rear pinstripe, but I think it was there. The last time I really saw your car Toby (I think or Tobin) was driving!!! He must like the way it drives too!!! Post the video again here; the guys and gals will love it---the car sounds awesome.
Well, we've hijacked this thread a little, but it sure has been some good, clean fun (on my end anyway).

The video is in my sig. And yeah, what's up with the red air cleaner? I have never seen one like it but have never been asked about it at a show. Check out the vid. It's cool. 'Ol Tob is getting long in the tooth. Still likes the rides though. A lot!

I still have 2 original w-36 3-M stripe kits that I picked up at the Oldsmobile 100 year anniversary in Lansing. One in black and one in white. I know the adhesive is probably bad but they will be perfect for replicating the stripe on my car,if I ever get it done.

Have you noticed the SSI wheels on the DeWitt picture...I bought that Phoenix kit a couple of years ago and as soon as I removed it from the package I knew it was wrong and sent it back...so I took the dimensions from the picture of Karl's original fender and went to my local stencil shop and had them create a negative stencil and gave it to the body/paint shop to have it painted on....and my wife is the one who likes the Hurst stripes on HER car, the '68 442 without the rallye stripes.

Can I tell if my '68 442 originally came with a W36 stripe?
Confession: I work for a dealer. Please don't ban me. I won't post any links. We have a '68 442, and I'd like to know if the W36 stripe it wears was original to the car. I think it matters. (?) I've included a picture of the data plate.

I'll also note that while folks here are happy to help, keep in mind that your dealership is trying to make a profit off the info you are asking us to provide for free.
Just sayin'

Mr. Padavano, I hadn't thought of it that way, but you're right. Thank you for sharing anyway. I'm really just a car guy that found a cool job, and I'll be looking for ways to share the information I'm learning with others whenever they want it, free of charge. -Jake

If you scroll up and read through this thread, you'll see that the stripe on the car in your photos is not in the correct factory position. As with just about every 1968 442 still on the road, it was added incorrectly.

Everything else on your data plate checks out as original. Y2 is Saffron with a Black Vinyl top. 940 is black bucket seat.
Unfortunately, to hard core 68 Olds guys, that stripe is just hideous
FWIW the rims appear to be incorrect and the trim rings do not have the correct brushed finish
Other than that, it's a beautiful car. I personally love Saffron

.... Which still doesn't answer Jake's question: did the car originally come with stripes? We only know the stripes we see were incorrectly applied during a repaint. The only way to know how the car left the factory is if it has factory paperwork.

Is it POSSIBLE that the fenders have been replaced with ones from a non-stripe 442? Yeah it's possible. Not very likely, but possible, especially since a restoration of an original stripe car would have had the original fenders to use as a pattern for emblem and stripe location.

This is a 68 I helped restore and I used Fusicks stencil kit with the stripe layout posted above. The best I remember, the stencil kit was 1/2" wider than the measurements on the said factory stripe layout. I went with that and I think the space for the 442 numerals was too wide also,so I just adjusted the spacing and it turned out nicely I think. Other than the 1/2" total width using the stencil kit,it was very close to the stripe layout.
