54-56 owners unite!

Just got my 55 day after fathers day. Previous owner did a lot of beautiful work to it. I cant get a brake drum.off which has be furious because i wanna go thru the brakes before i hit the road. Also need to fix a gas guage sending unit ground, as well as a trans fluid leak, oil leaks around the oil filter or oil pressure tube, and an oil leak behind the dash. Didnt think that was possible.... Hopefully its on the road stretching its legs by August.

hi i have recently had a 1956 olds rocket 324 motor rebuilt for a hot rod i am building ,the problem is i have made a side steer for it and dont have the room for a clutch pedal and would really like to have an auto in it so my wife can drive it also ,i have a 1951 auto for it but would like to bolt up a turbo 350 which is possible but i talked to bendtsens and i explained that i have the inspection cover for the trans but it wont fit over a 176 tooth flywheel and he said any of the three inspection covers will work that they are all the same size, well in a little confused because the one i have will NOT fit .looking for some direction Thanks Pat
I assume by inspection cover , you mean the lower bellhousing . The piece that bolts on the block , and the starter mounts to it . Right ?
Olds used at least four of these in the 49 thru 64 period.
The first one was used from 49 thru 53 , and was used with a 145 tooth flywheel .
The second was used from 54 thru 56 (324) , and was used with a 176 tooth flywheel .
The third was used from 57 thru 60 , and was used with a 176 tooth flywheel.
The fourth was used from 61 thru 64 , and was used with a 166 tooth flywheel .
To look at them all together , they look pretty much the same . Except for the place that the starter mounts to . All will bolt onto any 49 thru 64 block .
The best trans conversion (in my opinion) is offered by Ross Racing Engines.
Tony cuts the trans bellhousing off right in front of the pump. And then a special adapter is bolted on the front of the pump and to the block .

I know I have already responded to one of your threads but welcome to this special thread. There are some mightly fine cars featured on here. If you have not started at the beginning and gone all the way through the thread, I suggest you do that so you can see all the cars. Good stuff.

I would like to be added to the list of olds owners. I have a 56 rocket 88 4dr sedan bought it as a driver . Have been working on it a bunch sense i got it a year ago. It not a perfect car nor will it ever be with me owning it as we all know it takes very deep pocket to make one a 100 point car . But it all in how we look at the final project & what we are going to do with it . I live in york ,s.c. & hope to post a picture or 2 soon . My best to all of us proud oldsmobile owners.

Very nice. I am not a fan of continental kits but to each his own on that. I see you have the correct paint divider moldings and the end of the hockey stick moldings. Those are very rare and I was fortunate to score a set of those off a parts car. My car was originally sold blue and was sold in May 1954. I believe I read somewhere that Oldsmobile did not start using those until June of 54. Most people change the color under the taillight when they change to two tone paint. Are those original colors?

Not original color. the blue is called Yatting blue, a porsche color. repainted 6 or 7 years ago. I have 2 more 54 conv. one in primer m issing drivers door and nothing inside. the other one is for parts. really rusty. May get arond to them some day.

55 S 88 and 56 98
i recently bought my daughter a 56 98 4dr Hrd to w/ 56,400 miles on it with NO RUST HOLES....EVER.... and fresh interior and paint for $9000 and I am starting an off frame restoration on a 55 S88 Holiday 4dr Hard top. No rust holes at all but it has surface rust and the car is amazingly ding free. It has been off the road since late 1969. No engine or trans but I have had one from a 55 98 for 28 years or so that runs great to use in it. I have recently found and purchaced every factory option except the power window regulators and power antenna....still looking for these

fortunatly I can do virtually all the work except rechroming. I do engines, transmissions and differentials as well as all body work and interior myself so it just costs me materials..... Doing this 55 is a life long dream that will soon be fullfilled as I grew up in a car that is not only the same make and modle but even tge same colors. You see...dad had 2 texaco stations and used 55 and 56 Oldsmobiles as tow trucks includining draging loaded semi's in to repair. I could not tell ya all how many times I looked over my daddy's shoulder on a trip to see tge speedo at 110 mph and a long neck Mister Brau between his legs....these are GREAT cars

Once upon a time not long ago I was at a at a car show (imagine that) when this older gentleman came up and remarked that he sure liked my car and he bet that I had more in it than what it cost new. Not wanting to insult the older gent on his ignorance of the cost of modern restoring I replied that I had more in the front and rear bumper chrome than the car cost new I don't know if he believed me but it's a true fact. I no longer keep records of what I spend on my cars even after all these years it still shocks me what the bottom line will add up to. This is California prices but about $3300 for the bumpers and assorted small stuff.... Tedd

Can anyone tell me the correct name for the rubber door stops or bumpers that stop your doors from closing to far, and where I can buy the right ones???
Thanks guys for any help you can offer.

1956 98 and S88
Hey everyone, I just picked up a couple cars in the past year. the first I picked up was a very original 1956 4 dr holiday, then a couple weeks ago I picked up a 2dr holiday 98. I am trying to get them both on the road and it is great to have an original as a reference to see what is missing on the 98.

All I can tell you is the 54-3611D is correct for a 54 Super 88 2 door sedan. There were 27,882 Super 88 two door sedans manufactured in 1954. I believe the car was manufactured in California based on the C code on the data plate which would make sense with you being in California.

The color/trim codes indicate
it had a Polar White top over a Capri Blue body, just the opposite of mine, and has blue interior trim. Hiding within the patina is a sweet looking Olds.
