'72 cutlass supreme 4 door, weirdly optioned, good education. factory 455,posi, more.

Just bought this '72 Cutlass supreme 4 door hardtop sedan? No posts around the door glass. I've seen a couple of these, but this is the first one I've owned. It has a lot of options & is mostly original & I took some pictures to document how the factory did some of these things for us **** types..
It has a 455 4bbl with a TH400 trans, AC, heavy duty cooling(4 core rad.), disc brakes, tilt steering, power trunk, posi rear end, light package, clock, am radio with front & rear speakers, front & rear bumper guards, deluxe seat belts, & maybe more? Front fenders look to be in pretty good condition, as is the trunk lid.

The speedo shows 69,XXX miles & based on what I see, I don't think it is 169,xxx miles. The brake pedal shows little wear, most of the vacuum lines are the originals with the stripes on them, the heater hoses are the original ribbed type & the paint on the engine looks relatively good. Still has the exhaust manifold locks on it, the original master cylinder, radiator & battery cables.
The car was a local driver till about 5 years ago & has sat in a field since then. Squirrels have chewed a few things & deposited their nuts everywhere, but with a little starting fluid it cranked right over & tried to run. At least one of the plug wires is chewed through, but I'm sure with a new set it will fire up.

Some things I took pictures of are the washer jar on the pass side fender well with hose routing, negative cable attachment to alternator bracket, valve cover brackets, spark plug wire holders, & original sticker on the brake booster.
One weird thing I noticed is that even though it is a 4 door, it still has the front bench seat that tilts forward?? But there is no release lever to move or latch for it to hook onto? The passenger side seems seized/stuck/locked?
I do not have a title for it, so I will probably part it out soon, so look for it in the parts for sale section. Enjoy.

Interesting. Would like to view the pics better, but they are not enlarging, or being given the option of doing so.

Neat find - Cutlass Supreme with big block and TH400. Sounds like a '72 4 door version of the SX.

Was it a rare option to have a Cutlass Supreme with a bench seat? I've only seen the Supreme with buckets but I think those are 2 door cars. Or was it standard to have a bench in a 4 door car?

Ive never seen a 4 door with anything but a bench seat in it, i would be surprised if you could get buckets in a 4 dr. But never say never right?

You might be right. I've not looked at many 4 door Supremes. Did they ever put the bench in a two door Supreme?

According to the SPECS for 72, the Custom sport bench seat (A65) - with folding armrest was standard equipment for the CS sedans.

My point about the seat is that a 4 door car should not have a front seat that tilts forward, as they only did that to make it easier to get into the back seat(in a two door). With a 4 door, you don't need to tilt the seat forward, just open the rear door.
All of the 4 door cars(sedans & wagons) should have a bench seat that does not tilt forward. Not sure why this one has a tilt forward seat, but it looks like it was factory installed without the latching mechanism? Maybe they ran out of 4 door bench seats & just used what they had laying around?
Cutlass Supreme 2 doors came standard with bucket seats, but could be optioned with a bench seat with a center arm rest. Cutlass S front bench seats did not have the arm rest.

My dad use have a 72 cutlass 4 door similar to that. It had a lot of options like power windows, door locks, and disk brakes. It had the same type of bench seat that tilts forward.

Got the engine running & will probably keep the entire drive train for personal use. It is very original & unmolested. Factory carb, starter, water pump, etc.
I just now noticed the car has the factory fender braces. I know all or most 455 cars came with them, just wasn't expecting to see them on a 4 door & kinda embarassed I didn't see them before.

Yes, I own one with factory bench. full bench, not a split.

I can't speak for Oldsmobiles, but other brands with the biggest engine in non-performance models are quite rare. I wouldn't be surprised if they made less than 100 Cutlass Supreme 4-doors with the U-code motor (what about a V-code?!).
