70 442 pace car engine

Was the 442 pace car 455 engine the same as a non-pace car 455 engine....or was it the same as the W30 engine...aluminum intake, special heads, etc.?

Same as a standard 442 (except for the two real pace cars IIRC)

i believe the 70 pace cars had a W-40 455 450 hp. the reason you never hear about it is because the w-30 snobs want all the attention

I never heard what Charlie said. I think, if that was so , that, today, you would hear so much about it,especially when they want to sell it.

I think Socairs is asking if the 1970 Pace car replica 442s had the same engine as stock 442s or were they a W30 motor. There were no W30 Pacecars made but I have read a few articles over the years that state the two cars that actually paced the race had W30 spec'd motors but no badging. In 1970 there were 442 pace car replicas with 455 engines and there were Cutlass pace car replicas with 350 engines - all were convertibles (except for a few of the wagons).

The two actual pace cars used at the race had hand-built engines that were never available in production cars. The 1970 pace car replicas came with stock 365 HP 455s (in the 442 versions, obviously - Cutlass pace car replicas got 350s).

70 pace car

It sounds like the Y74 was simply an appearance package, with no specific mechanical alterations.....rear end ratio, etc. I always thought it was in some way higher performance than the 442 package by itself.

Official pace cars 1 and 2 as stated were hand built both were painted black and chromed out! Looks like intake is a W-30 style but I have another source that said that they put on the standard intake for added weight a higher track speeds! I may be able to back this statement up in a few days, number 2 sits only three miles from my house, my buddy owns it and have rode in it a couple of times.
