Weird whining/squeal noise

Here's a weird one

Frequently I get a whining/squeal noise from the engine bay

This happens when I release the throttle at all, even while going straight. In sport mode it becomes VERY loud, even at idle.

Is this power steering fluid? It isn't a belt or pulley squeal, rather than a Weee-eee-e-e-ee-e-e-eeeeeeee (like a blower kind of haha)

If I release the throttle it starts, but when I hit it at all it stops

It's been doing this for a long time too - It stops when I accelerate, starts when I release the throttle - not so much the brakes.

It sounds like an electronic noise too, but it's from the engine, if that helps you imagine the noise, it's loud, almost thought it was the radio the first time it happened when I used to drive it around the driveway before I got it

In sport it sounds much worse. Remember this is only on releasing the throttle when it starts, weird... And once it starts it continues until I accelerate again, and today I had it in park running, it was making the noise, opened the hood, it becomes louder... It was dark so I'm not sure where it was coming from, yet it seems like from a google search it's related to power steering?

Wheels were straight too, it's weird stuff...

"S" is actually for "Super" on Oldsmobiles.

The same gear is merely "2" on those crappy Chebbies .

Oh, yeah... could be the power steering, or could be some other accessory bearing, like the water pump or the alternator. You've got to listen with a mechanic's stethoscope, or a highly tuned rubber hose to find out.

Yeah - super at sucking gas!! And R is for race!!
Hope what you're hearing isn't the front pump on the trans! That'll make noise when you back off the gas!

try spraying the belt with brake cleaner while running, dont get any on the paint.it may be just some burnt rubber on the belt and belt dressing sucks, never try belt dressing on a serpentine belt either as it will throw the belt immediately and probably into your face (experienced ).

I think it may just be the drone of a slightly worn out automatic transmission. My 200,000 miles+ ST300 makes the same group of noises.

My trans mainly did that in park. In gear, or accelerating it was quiet.
