YOM Texas plates - yay or nay??

YOM Texas plates - yay or nay??
Okay, so I now have two sets of YOM TX license plates that I was wanting to put on my 72.
The N set was bought online on a whim and appears to be too yellow and has dark yellow streaks in it. The online picture looks whiter.
I took a 3 hour train trip to Fort worth yesterday and bought the S set, as the ad listing showed them to be glistening white. They were yellow, too. However there are fewer streaks in them.
I learned that in taking pictures of plates, never use the camera flash! Natural light only with a white background will show their true colors.
The yellow shows up very easily against a white car. Almost to the point it is a distraction (in my opinion).
I am not interested in having the plates restored - too much $. I would get vanity plates instead.
So, any suggestions at what to do?
1 - use N set.
2 - use S set.
3 - Use the free flat ugly plain standard issue plates
4 - get vanity plates (I kinda want to do this anyway... LADY72?? )
IF any of the Texans here are interested in these YOM plates, I may be willing to sell at 25 a set. I will not need both sets, and I may drop the idea totally and sell both. The 12-31-10 deadline is approaching!

Those look like reflectorized plates, meaning they'll be hard and expensive to restore. 1971 Virginias and 1977-later North Carolinas are like that too.
My take on YOM plates is that if they benefit you in reduced registration, insurance and property tax fees they're probably worth it, if you can deal with the tradeoff of limited use.
Have you found any NOS plates? It's still fairly easy to find NOS Virginia plates still in the wrappers, and that's the way I try to go with mine.

As Bully Dog said, makes it look tired...
Good opinions so far, let's keep 'em coming. If I choose the YOM plates, I will go Thurs or Fri to the tax office...

I would research having them restored and do that.
I cannot imagine it costing more than $200, and that really is a drop in the bucket when you think about all the money we spend on these things.
I've always had a "thing" for license plates ever since i was a kid. I was facinated by when i'd see cars still running the previous plate styles. I remember digging around behind my grandfathers service station and seeing 4 different styles of california plates all slightly different colors... So to this day I get a big kick out of seeing original plates on old cars.
Hell vanity plates up here cost about $100 a year anyway... 2 yeras of that and youd have paid for the plate restoration!
Just my $.02
btw... Attached is the original plate for my car (2nd owners brother found it for me in their attic!) and a plate holder from the dealership it was bought new at (closed in 1972 & merged with a caddy dealer across town... so took a lot of searcing to find it!)

With vanity plates the other drivers remember the plate after you cut them off or something. With regular old street type plates you can remain incognito and blend in with all the other '72 442 convertibles like yours and they can't spot you to deliver retribution.
The YOM plates don't look that bad but that green is pretty green.
Register them and then paint them yourself, that green would look much better if the background was white.
They look better with original GM type license plate frames too, the plates always look bare without them to me. The original heavy diecast type chrome and painted dealer frames are pretty nice too.
I say vanity or the Stop Teenage Pregnancy plates too.
When are you going to put a set of longhorn steer antlers on the hood Rob?
First thing I'd do If I lived in Texas, probably glad I don't live there.

YOM, probably the S-ones. I tried to find YOM for my car but that is really hard because they re-use the number sequence and most of the ones used in the late forties in MO are now being assigned to big truck carriers and they won't allow duplication.

I like that - and yours, too!
With all these plates, I might devise up a rolodex mechanism and change them out while driving! Engineering mind.....
As soon as I get that late 70's Eldorado!
I do have a couple cow skulls - how would those look?

YOM tags
your S tags look ok, as I have mentioned in a previous post, you may be able to get some unissued plates from local dealers cheaper than restoration. You can call Dean Powell out of Lockhart TX, he will have the tags you need at 512-398-7226 or perhaps Larry Machacek from Conroe TX at 936-441-8209. I've dealt with both, reasonable guys, and will...
If these guys have something you like, perhaps they could overnight them to you. Or of course your existing tags are still a very legitimate and viable option. Your car is rapidly approaching 40 years......in car years that is middle aged at minimum. I don't feel as though YOM tags will detract from your car at all, even if they do have a petina on them. Best wishes with your tag endeavors!!!!

Okay, I posted new pics in the top post, in good daylight! They are just yellowed, no big streaks.
Funk, I will try to call those guys later today. I am running out of time, so any new ones may not be an option.
So far, the S set and vanity plates are in the lead and tied!

LadynRob, Definitely use the "S" set. They look great on the car.
A cool letter and number combination too.
They really make the car look vintage which I like. you can always get vanity plates anytime you want with whatever you want on them, but to find great plates like the "s" ones is much harder.

Rob, you should triad me the S plates for something you need. And you should use the N plates. But of course I voted for you to use the S plates, so you should keep them. I do not think it is a distraction at all, in fact the goal is to have people look. Just think I would have enough money to have a set of plates re done, if Kurt did not rip me off. *-)

Carl, if you want the N plates, I will give them to you, as i do not have a need for both. Get them approved and registered now before the 1-1-11 deadline and restore them later. Just a thought.
So far, the S plates are in the lead and I think I will use them. I can always get vanity plates later down the road.
