How do I tell if my wheel bearings are bad????

It feels like a thump or knock against my floor by the driver side front!!!
I also get alot of it just driving on a straight smooth road!!!
It gets real bad when I let off the gas and just roll or when I'm coming to a stop!!!!

I checked my ball joints a tie rods!!
I also noticed when I had the driver front wheel off the ground I could move the whole thing drum & all!!!!

Thanks Drew!!!!!!

Usually wheel bearings cause a droning or growling sound. It will usually get worse when you load it up by swirving the car left to right. If you can move the whole tire and drum its definatly a sign its loose or not adjusted. Which would lead to failure.

Check your ball joints again. They can only be checked properly with tension off the coil spring. Jack up car under control arm where spring perch is and use a 2x4 under wheel and tire to check for looseness by lifting up on the 2x4..

I'll do that, but when I checked them I had the entire carr off the ground!!!( on a lift)
I grabbed the tire on the top & bottom, push & pulled!!!

A lift will not take tension off off front springs. You need a jack under the lower control arm otherwise you cannot accurately check the balljoints because of spring tension.

Ok, I went to NTB where a friend works & had a full check!!!!
Both upper & lower need replaced!!!

I let him drive my car and he told me he doesn't think the noise and viabrations are coming the wheel, but from under the car!!!!

Could bad u joints do this!!!
How can I check them????

Thanks Drew

When you have the car on the ground, engine running, foot on the brake. Shift back and forth between drive and reverse, engine ideling. If you hear a "clunk" as the transmission shifts back and forth, there is a good possibility you have bad U joints. It could also mean rear end gear wear.
