Timing Chain & Gears 1971 Cutlass 350

I am going to replace my timing chain and gears, but I know the timing marks have to be lined up. Should this be done before you take off the old gears and chain, or after? If its before how do you line them up. I have been turning the engine over with a breaker bar and i seems like they dont want to line up and the chain is slipping a bit because its so loose. Whats the best way to accomplish this?

Your going to have to get the number one piston all the way up on the compression stoke. The timing mark on the crank will line up. Then take the cam gear and chain off. Then put the cam gear back on turn it until the mark lines up. Then you can replace your gears and chain.
