HELP--pulley alignment issues

I'm hoping someone can help. The car has hit yet another snag.

Just spoke with the guy finishing up my car. At the moment, he is having an issue with the pulley on the power steering unit/bracket being too far away from the engine. He thinks we might have the wrong bracket.

Facts:
1) car is a '68 442, original 400 engine

2) because the car did not originally come with A/C, a new water pump had to be used

3) the power steering unit/brackets were (I believe) originally from the '68 Cutlass S (with obviously a 350). I'm pretty sure this is true, because my original 442 power steering would have only had a 1-groove pulley (non-AC).

Based on this, what's the problem? Are there different brackets for the 400 engine vs. 350? Is the water pump incorrect?

I'm not really sure what's going on and I need to get this figured out asap. The time and money that I'm expending on this car is getting to be ridiculous.

Thanks.

UGH.... what a mess.
You cannot mix and match pulleys and brackets from different years of different motors. they should be kept in a complete set.
There are 3 different water pump sizes, and 30+ different pulley combinations.

What did you do to it?
Put AC on a non ac car? Or just change the pump?

Well, yes and no. My 442 had no A/C. The Cutlass S body I ended up using had A/C.

I'm guessing this is going to be a big problem.

OK, apparently everything else lines up correctly (including the AC compressor which just received its proper brackets). It's just that the power steering pulley sticks out too far.

Think we might have a later model bracket for the power steering.

You may just have to use a 2 groove PS pulley from a different pump then.
