A "well documented" 1970 "W-30", sold for $137K. Someone's in for a rude awakening.

Someone with that kind of coin to drop on a car without knowing exactly what he has purchased, won't be worried out having the correct heads on the engine.
Why would you think, he is a fool or have a burning A-hole??
To him, it was something he seen and wanted, money aside, he took it home and will be more than happy with his purchase IMO.

Probably because most purchases in that dollar range are for investment rather than drivers. When he wants to sell it, or his family sells it after he is gone will have a rude awakening when they find out it isn't what they thought it was all along.

Someone on another thread in the last few days, claimed the same car sold for $165,000 in 2016 at a B-J auction. $137 is less than $165, so from an investment standpoint, not good. Perhaps there is a big "depreciation" write off ?

For me it’s the little things that make my antenna go up. Like there’s no reason why if the heads needed to be replaced (which you could explain) that they couldn’t re-use the correct original notched valve covers.....so who slapped this motor together?
And that’s not really a detail that someone capable of the quality of work seen on this car would miss. Any research at all would have prevented that from happening.
Makes no sense.
Just got one guy passing an almost correct car that he paid too much for to the next guy with lots of money?

I understand your sentiment regarding what you consider to be "too much". I am not convinced the purchaser thinks he paid "too much". He paid what he could afford and what he wanted to pay for the vehicle.
If ANYONE wants an original of ANYTHING - they buy it new & put it in a museum. They never drive it, it never gets worked on & it becomes a museum piece. Eventually, to be found by some future generation who can't believe we made vehicles which ran on tiny plants and animals such as algae and zooplankton.

Oh I totally agree, I know some guys that spend on cars just because they want them. They also do consider them an investment so there is some risk.
I’m still just trying to understand how that fully restored w30 doesn’t have notched valve covers on it. Guess I shouldn’t try to understand why people do what they do.....

My point of the "more money than brains" comment is that one could easily find a car at an equivalent level of correctness for a lot less money, or conversely for the same money one could have bought a correct car. I certainly don't have six figures to throw away on a toy. I realize that other people do, but the truly wealthy didn't get that way by wasting their money.

What you stated was

I sense you're vacillating.
I would argue an idiot doesn't waste his/her money.
I believe your point of this thread is to point out a 1970 "W-30" should have "F" heads instead of "E" heads.
The buyer was an idiot with waaaaay more money than brains.

But, yeah....the car is nice, yet soooo much is wrong about it.

Can I play?
In addition to the valve covers, HEI ignition, and painted lift hook/water outlet, a quick look at the photo reveals:
1) Bypass hose clamps improperly oriented with tension screws way too long (as per PIM)
2) OAI hold down spring incorrectly attached at the clip (as per PIM)
3) Black painted dipstick
4) Aftermarket intake and dashpot bolts with improper finish
5) Aftermarket style temp sending unit
6) 90 degree spark plug boots
137K is mucho cake.

I'm not currently in the market for 6 figure cars, nor am I Olds-savy enough to notice anything off on this engine other than the head casting and HEI, but if I were in the market for such a car I would at least be smart enough to invite all you folks to come check the car out with me in advance! But, it takes two to tango...at least one other cat was bidding this thing up. Hopefully the correct engine/heads/trans/you name it came on a pallet with the car, for the new owners sake.

Wealth breeds wealth and multiplies at staggering rates. So many numbers matching cars/parts over the years have been changed up, re-stamped etc. Their are more re-stamped period correct cars than built around the globe. The buyer likely didn't care about being a perfect car. Maybe he could have waited and bought a correct car. However, I don't think the person is an idiot nor has more money than brains. It takes brains to manage that kind of $$ . The purchaser may put the car in some local parades/charity events using it as a write off . Who knows?
My 76 Olds is no collector car and holds no value, yet, I have more chinesium money in my Olds than it would ever be worth.
So, If we talk about someone with more money than brains and an idiot for spending too much money on a car, then that would include me and so many others here haha.
Jus' sayin
